I had hernias repaired with my RNY but none since.  Sorry they couldn't do you GB at the same time.  I had mine out years ago, the first time I had a major weight loss, and was glad since so many folks end up having to have them out after surgery.

Recovery depends on what type of hernia, how large the incision(s) from the surgery, and whether or not they did anything special to repair it such as install a mesh panel.  If the surgeon did not mention a spoecial diet, then there is no special diet to follow... you just need to be sure to get as much protein as possible because your body needsa the proitein to heal.

I had an incisional hernia repaired about a year after my RNY.  It was a 5 in*****ision and the surgeon put in a 6x6 inch piece of mesh to be sure that the hernia would not recur.  I was off work for 4 weeks but still had pain on one side where the mesh was attached for several weeks after that.

I had an incisional hernia 2 1/2 years after open RNY.  They operated on me at noon and I was discharged by 5:00 pm the same day.  I was off work for 2 weeks and then return to my office job.  I was told not to pick up anything heavier than a 5 lb. sack of sugar for at least 3 months.  I had the mesh put in over the hernia and the only complaint that I had was even now after three years I have numbness was the mesh was put in.  That area of my stomach feels like my jaw would feel if I had a shot from the dentist.  I was told that eventually the feeling would return but I do not believe so.  I think those nerves were cut. I occasionally have a little side pain like a pulling but that is all.  I have not had any problems with hernias since.
