I just got my surgery one week ago tomorrow, and the hiccups are paiinful, and do not stop. Is this like my new norm forever?? Just wondering.

I get them occasionally I am two week post op. Try holding your breath and taking ten really really tiny sips of water in a row. That always makes mine go away.

Can you sip something warm? That's what I did/do when I get them and it seems to help. Also, my surgeon OK'd me to use the Mylanta gas strips. They melt on your tongue and helped so much with the hiccups and gas.

Good Luck!

I didn't have the hiccups, but I did sneeze every time I ate or drank something. I thought the same thing as you--will this be my new normal--but after about 10 days it went away. It still happens occasionally, but not constantly like before. Hopefully that will be your experience as well.

When you havea laparoscopic procedure, they inject a gas into your body cavity and blow it up a little bit like a balloon, to give the surgeon some room to manoevre. This irritates the diaphragm and  nerves that go up to your shoulder, hence the hiccups. It is also why you get shoulder pain. No body warned me when I had my gall bladder out years ago. Don't panic, but if it ireally is bothering call your dr and they may have some tricks for you. I think, as annoying as they are, you will likely have to ride them out.

Good luck

Have you contacted your surgeon?  Having hiccups that are short-term are normal with the amount of gas.  But hiccups that do not stop and that can be painful can be a sign of a leak.  I would contact your doctor's office and have them check it out.

A tip that works for me every time for the hiccups:

Fill a glass of water to the brim. Very full.

Bend over, keeping the glass upright next to your body.

Drink out of the side of the glass away from your body... just take a couple of tiny sips and swallow while bent over.

It works every time for me. I am pre-op, so I don't know if it works after surgery. But I get hiccups all the time, and this is the cure for me.

Hope this helps!

I didn't have the hiccups right after surgery, but I get them now (10 months out) when I'm full.  You'll read where some people get a runny nose or other "signs", but mine is the hiccups and they last a couple of minutes or so.
