Oh yes, cold feet are normal!  I thought about backing out until I was wheeled into the OR.

I have 4 children too.... the best advice I can give is to keep the kids out of your food.... little buggers think that protein bars are candy.  Seriously, save some money by buying samples and don't bother trying them until you are post-op, because your taste will change.  I buy most of my protein through amazon.com because they discount on auto-ship.

Also, for protein powder, one of my favorites was unjury chicken soup flavor -- the other flavors I found too sweet and the salty was a welcome change.  Nice to have an "unflavored" powder around too -- note that they are unflavored not taste free.  But then, you can add them to your own base.

Good luck with your sleep study!

Thank you so much for sharing with me! I'm trying to stay postive about the liquid diet. I know it will help make the surgery go smother so everyone says. I pray all will be well worth it in the end like you said. This is day one I have 11 more days to go! Surgery on 7/26/2011

Hi! I am new here and am currently in the process of getting everything together for my RNY. That being said, I think that it is normal to be scared and/or nervous before ANY surgery. You just have to remember that you are doing it to be healthy for yourself and your children.
Because of my extremely high BMI, which I hve to reduce, I am already using meal replacement shakes. I have been using 'BODY FORTRESS' protein shake powder (at the advice of my dietician) from WalMart. The cost is $14.88 for a 2 lb canister, and has 27 servings. I also am taking vit/min supplements.
I wish you peace of mind and a hassle free surgery and recovery.

Yep, cold feet are completely normal.  I thought about backing outthe night before my surgery and momentarily at the hospital before being wheeled into the OR.  Hang in there!   Good luck!

Ok this message is kind of long so just bear with me. I do make all the important points of this surgery.

It is ok to feel that way but trust me the benefits FAR outway any minor complications that could arise. I hope this will help ease your mind, there are ALWAYS risks, but ask yourself these questions: Am I a heavy smoker? A heavy drinker? Drug usage? Morbidly obese? These are the factors that come into play if you wanna reconsider. The risk of death is about 1% of all total cases.

I definately felt my emotions going up and down on an emotional roller-coaster. If you do the surgery your quality of life will greatly improve and you will have so much energy. There are more pros than cons. Here are the pros and cons:

CONS:

Lung Problems -  Atelectasis
Pneumonia
Pulmonary Embolism
Infections - Abscess
Wound Infection
Urinary Tract Infection
Bleeding Conditions - Hemorrhage
Transfusions
Bowel Obstruction
Chronic Nutritional Problems
Protein Deficiency
Vitamin Deficiency
Transient Hair Loss
Loss of Muscle Mass (Happened to me, now I have to start over.)

PROS:

No more High Blood Pressure

No more High Blood Cholesterol

Heart Disease less likely to develope

Over 90% of Type II diabetics obtain excellent results

Most asthmatics find that they have fewer and less severe attacks, or sometimes none at all.
Improvement of exercise tolerance and breathing ability usually occurs within the first few months after surgery. Often, patients who have barely been able to walk, find that they are able to participate in family activities, even sports activities.

Dramatic relief of sleep apnea occurs as patients lose weight. Many report that within a year of surgery, their symptoms were completely gone, and they had even stopped snoring completely

Relief of all symptoms of reflux usually occurs within a few days of surgery, for nearly all patients.

When gallbladder disease is present at the time of the surgery, it is "cured" by removing the gallbladder during the operation.

Stress Urinary Incontinence - This condition responds dramatically to weight loss, usually by becoming completely controlled.

Patients usually experience considerable relief of pain and disability from degenerative arthritis and disk disease, and from pain in the weight-bearing joints. This tends to occur early, with the first 25 -30 pounds lost, usually within about a month after surgery.

AND FINALLY... Your quality of life will be better. You will feel normal, you will have so much confidence in yourself.

I hope this helps you make an informed choice.
Good luck!

I know WHEY protein  is what they want you to have. There are plenty of good proteins out there but the one I like best that tastes good to is Muscle Milk Light. I usually get Vanilla Cream or Strawberry. There are other protein products out there like protein shots, protein water, and like one of the previous posters there is protein that you can mix with food. If I do protein its usually on the days I work out and I will get about 80-100 grams in a shake. When I don't work out I will usually go with protein bars and supplament that later with a lean cuisine meal that has about 25-30 grams of protein. Hope this helps.
