Help--tried my hand at swimming--not as fit as I thought!

I consider myself a relatively fit person now. I can do 45 minutes of hard work on most cardio machines (elliptical, treadmill, precor, etc.) and then do a full body weights workout consisting of 3 sets of 15 reps and still be able to do more.

But WHOA Nelly! I tried to swim--like good form actual swimming--swim the other day. I could barely make it 100 meters total and that was with breaks (to gasp and sputter!). My triceps cramped up. It was awful. I'd really like to be able to become a swimmer because I've heard it is such a good total body workout, but man it was HARD. I think it is harder muscularly than running is (tried my hand at that too and still trying to become a runner).

Do any of you swim regularly for exercise? Do you do a particular stroke? I find freestyle to be completely exhausting because I can't get my breathing right. Breast is much better and back is okay, but that is where my triceps started giving me a fit. I thought about just getting a kick board and doing laps holding that but then I lose the arm work. I do see one lady who holds this foam thing between her legs and just uses her arms--I think I might drown if I did that!

Thanks for your feedback.

Denise

I am thinking of taking lessons. Before, I didn’t realize how much I floated. Now, I have built up a good deal of muscle mass and I sink quickly. It will take some work to learn to get myself to swim again.

Interestingly enough, though, my bum and my boobs still float. Ba-dum-bum.

Gives new meaning to breast stroke--ba-dum-dum right back at cha!

Back in the day I used to think I could survive a boat sinking in the ocean because I literally could float upright I was so buoyant. I wanted to enter one of those water treading contests against a Navy Seal or something--I wouldn't have even had to kick my legs! I haven't tried to float really since I lost weight. I'll have to try it and see if I sink or not.

Enjoy your day!

Nik hit the nail on the head!

Before we had lots of fat which made us bouyant. So swimming became an exercise of just propelling ourselves through water.  After losing weight we lose much if not all of that bouyancy which means swimming now involves keeping us at the surface and propelling ourselves through the water.

I like to say I don't swim but rather "I prevent myself from drowning with slight forward momentum"

Best way is to just keep at it.

LMAO! That is too funny. I'd say the lifeguards at my pool might agree that mine is more your description than actual swimming based on how pitiful I looked stopping halfway down the lanes to breathe!

I shall keep at it. Always good advice!

Try doing the backstroke or the side stroke... the breathing part with those strokes are easy. I have issues with breathing and swimming too.
Also, I like to "jog" in the water.... going from one side of the pool to the other.  It is a great work out and easy on the joints. The water provides great resistance.
I really enjoy exercising in the pool...its great esp with the heat waves going on...

I just know it is so easy on the joints too. And yes, the added benefit of not having a heat stroke is great!!

I forgot about the side stroke. My mom used to do that ALL the time.

Thanks for the reminder!!
