my NUT told me to STOP the Shakes!

I still do a shake each day, but your nut is correct about carbs. Milk drives the carb count up quite a lot, so I stick with Premier Protein shakes, which have 30 gm. Protein and only 4 gm of carbs. I admit I do it because it is an easy routine for me, and I also know that I jump start the days protein for the day if I have the shake for breakfast.

My doc is ok with it as long as I am watching the overall nutritional picture. I use few dairy products, aside from cottage chese (which is a great protein source) so I am not too worried.

You know what really burns my butt? When NUTs give advice like this but then fail to EDUCATE patients about carbs.

Milk has lactose, a simple sugar. Yes, it's a carb. But the body doesn't treat it the same way as a Twinkie and your NUT darn well knows it.

Secondly, I don't know what powder you use but mine has 3g carbs in it. Milk has 12. So that's 15g of carbs at best. And you can also make water based shakes, in which case you're only getting 3g of carbs. Or you could use low-carb dairy drinks (like Hood Calorie Countdown) and get 6g of carbs per shake. But protein shakes are a great way to get a lot of protein in a form that our pouches won't reject.

Let me say though that it IS possible to get all your protein from food. But you have to eat all your meals and plan them well. If that isn't your strong suit, you might want to consider going rogue and finding a lower carb way to continue with your shakes.

No way.  I can't stop my shakes and even if she told me too I wouldn't.  Simply because I can not get it all in thru food.  Heck, I can't imagine ever being able to get it in that way without some help.  Love my shakes.

The program that I am in through Kaiser Richmond has hundreds of RNY patients that they advise to never drink protein drinks. They say for long term success, you must get your protein from solid foods. It seems like many folks on this site use supplements, though, and have been very successful. For me, I plan to stick with the program recommendations until I have a good reason not to. It's too early for me to guess what will work long term.

Great attitude! I like that. Stick with your plan unless you have a good reason not to.

Everyone should take note of that.

I see nothing wrong with getting all your protein from solid foods if you are able to do that.

But how will you get enough protein right after surgery when you're still on liquids?  Or eating pureed food but just a couple spoonfuls at a time?  Or does that program advise eating solid foods right after surgery?

How much protein do you get in a day?

honestly have no idea... dont measure my food in terms of proteins/carbs/sugars.  Just by quantity of how much i can put in.

That’s what I suspected. If you don’t do shakes, it becomes even more important to measure at least your protein (this is more to the original poster than to you, Diva. I’ve already nagged you enough!).

Lack of protein can cause problems long term, not the least of which being that your body can start eating away at your muscles as it shrinks. So even if you keep a running tally, even if you only check every now and again, do have some way of knowing that you’re getting enough protein!
