Depo after WLS?? Ladies only...

I had my RNY a little over 4 months ago and have pretty much been bleeding ever since. I had a few short periods where the birth control pills helped but it hasn't lasted long...My gyn just changed my pills to a different kind. I am on the 3rd week and the bleeding still is not stopping. I am thinking of trying the depo. I had this problem years ago because of PCOS and they gave me depo then and it helped for several years. I just don't want it to stop the weight loss. In the back of my mind I am thinking it shouldn't unless it causes e to eat more and I am NOT going to do that...What do you all think??

My bestie has RNY last year and is on the depo. She said she had some water gain btu it went away.

If you are bleeding that much make sure you are getting plenty of iron.

I am on depo- have been on it since I had lap band in 2009. I am still on it after having RNY and my ob/gyn said to me its better than the pill. I havent had a period in years... I don't think the depo has caused me to eat more at all. good luck!

I had RNY in Feb this year and I've had two Depo injections since then. I haven't noticed any problem with being on it.

I started on depo about half-way through my weight loss and it did not affect my loss. I was on it about a year and then got off it. I do think the hormones made me feel crazy.

I get the depo shots, and they haven't affected my weight at all one way or the other.

Also, please consider what the PP said and get your iron monitored if you are bleeding that constantly. You'll likely need to take a lot more iron than the normal guidlelines if the bleeding is pretty much non-stop.

Good luck=)

I am currently on the depo shots.  Just had RNY on July 5th.  Being told by my doctor and NUT that I need to figure out another form of birth control because the depo shot causes bone density loss and with RNY and not getting all the nutrients you need that's another added factor to bone density  loss.  I really don't want to change, but I'm gonna listen to them.  They know more than I do.  The NUT is also suggesting that I do a bone density test because I've already been on depo for around 9 years.

I took depo for 12 years previously. As far as I know my bones are fine. I havent had a shot in about 4 years now but I guess I will have to get back on it. It's either that or a hysterectomy and I want to avoid that as long as possible. I will be calling my surgeons office tomorrow tho to see what they say.

I bled for 3 months straight with the depo shot after my surgery... If it has worked for you before, you have a better chance I think of it working for you again... It's really something that no one else can answer for you... Just be aware that bleeding is the number 1 side effect of the depo shot and once you have had it, you are limited in what you can take to stop the bleeding since there is no way for them to take the shot back out of you for 3 months. Also, the shot does leech calcium from your bones, so you will need to take extra calcium and be even more aware of your bone density than you would be normally with the RNY.

You should be having a dexascan at least once a year forever, and I would definitely insist on one before you take the depo shot again.

Feel better!! Ask for a referral to the hematologist any time your hemoglobin drops below 8 (12 is normal)!!!! You are not able to absorb iron normally with the RNY either, and anemia gets real bad, real fast when you are bleeding constantly! I've lived it!!

Huggles!!
