So...I'm less that 20 days out from my surgery (Aug 22) and yesterday I got a call from my doctor's office saying that the biopsy from the EDG came back positve for h pylori.  My first question was "what the heck is that?"  My next question was "how in the heck did I get it".  I'm now on antibiotics and anticids to clear up the bacterium before surgery.  I've been googling like crazy trying to figure out how much of an effect this could have on my surgery.  Did anyone here have this bacterium in thier stomachs and have to do antibiotic therapy prior to surgery?  Can anyone point me in the direction of some good info on h pylori and bypass risks/complications?

Thanks!

one of my friends who had gastric bypass had that first she had to take the antibiotics and it was all cleared up prior to surgery. Not sure where to go look for it, but I would think just googling the name might get you some info. If she was here, I'd ask her, but she just left for a week long vacation.  sorry!

My surgery isn't until the 31st of this month.  I was told that I had the h-pylori bacteria, and was put on a two week stint of the antibiotics and antacids to clear it up.  I hated taking the antibiotics due to the taste of them, they left a nasty "asprin" taste in my mouth for two weeks.  but I did take them the whole two weeks. As to googling it, the full name of it is: Heliocabacter Pylori.  I googled it, I found little about it, but a lot of people have it and don't know it.  It can be caused by dirty water, eating from unclean dishes. I know that while I was taking it and afterwards, I'm not having the problems with acid reflux like I was.  I wish I had more information for you, or could be more helpful, but this is what I know.

Thanks for the replys

I did frin some basic information about h-pylori, but I was trying to see if there was any information related to surgery outcomes for folks that have/had this.  The funny thing is, I NEVER had any problems with acid reflux or other stomach issues, so I guess I was part of the asymptomatic group of people.

I read somewhere that something like 70 - 80% of the population has h.pylori. I was positive and took my meds... no problems

I had it before surgery and did a 14 day stretch of the Prev Pak,... My Dr. didnt seem too concerned about it and gave me the standard medication for it. I had some minor side effects: upset stomach and some heart palpitations from the meds. They tested me a week before surgery and it was fine. Yay!

Thanks everyone.  Glad to know that it's not a huge deal as far as surgery complications/recovery.  I have my final pre-op visit with the Doc tomorrow and I've got a LIST of questions to ask and this will certainly be one of them!
