Realistic Return to Work Expectations

I'm 2.5 weeks away from RNY surgery (holy s**t!!), and am pumped yet nervous at the same time.

One of my managers is giving me a bit of grief about taking time off from work. She knows I'm having surgery (doesn't know what for/kind), but is making it extremely obvious that my time away from work is a big inconvenience for her. The funniest part is that my job does not impact her in any way, it is 100% a power trip thing.

How long did you all take off and rest up after surgery? Is it reasonable to expect that I could be back at work on light duties (I have an office job as a Analyst) approximately 2 weeks post-surgery? I'm a fairly active person pre-surgery, and I'm hoping this will help in the recovery process.

Congrats on your upcoming surgery!!!

Keep in mind everyone has a different recuperation period. I worked a desk job as well and was off for 4 weeks. The surgery itself was a breeze and experienced no pain or discomfort. In my case the time off was needed to get used to my new lifestyle and at approximately 2 weeks I hit a period of extreme fatigue.

With that being said take the time you need to recover and get back into your life. Again congrats and see you on the loser's bench!!!

Thanks Lori =)

I'll definitely be adjusting to my new life, that is for sure! I also attend University full-time (yeah, I like to fill my plate, not just with food! LOL). Can't wait to join you all on the bench, I've always considered myself a huge loser!

Everybody is different, but yes, some of us (me included) could have gone back to a light duty office job at 2 weeks.

I had surgery a week and a half ago and am back at work today.  I'll let you know how it goes!  I feel I could have gone back to work last week, even, as I'm dying of boredom!

WOOT! Congrats on your surgery! I hear you with the boredom thing! I'm exactly the same way. I usually don't take a sick day from work unless I'm on my deathbed because of the fact that I get bored at home.

Definitely keep me posted on how you are doing!

I stayed out for 4 weeks and I have a desk job.  I wish I stayed out like 3 months though with the fatigue.  Luckily my supervisor's sisters BOTH had WLS themselves so I was allowed to take naps for lunch and use her office as needed.
Babygirl got her surgery March 3rd...     She's from 339 to 200 as of 6/14/2012.. SOO proud of my bigbabygirl

lunch time naps? Hey, you wanna talk to my Manager! lol

The fatigue is one thing that I do hear a lot about and of all recovery aspects, it is the one I'm concerned with the most in regards to returning to work (and Uni). I'm pretty sure I may have the opportunity to work from home, and also possibly part days should that need arise.

I have an office job and my doctor wants me off six weeks to recover. He says that it is major surgery and the time is needed to help adjust to a new lifestyle.

I would think that you would be okay barring that you have no complications.  Don't cut yourself short though.  I went back at 1 and 1/2 weeks to start to get my classroom better, but I was out and about after a couple of days!  We are all different!
