My doc's office said I could swallow pills as soon as I can tolerate them.  I did from day one.  I just made sure they were not big, and if they were I used a pill spliter and cut them in half.  The only ones I do not swallow are my multi vitamins, B12, and calcium.

You've got to change your mindset---family functions are for seeing the people you love, not for eating. It is a difficult chore to make celebrations about the people, not the food, but it isn't impossible.

My surgeon told me NOT to crush my meds, even though they told me to in the hospital.

The first couple days in the hospital they crushed my pills (so nasty, yuck!) or had me take liquids but after a day or two (I was in for 5 days) they allowed me to swallow my pills. They said as long as the pill was no bigger than a Good-n-Plenty candy it could be swallowed. They also said not to take more than 2 or 3 pills together to avoid them getting stuck. I have been swallowing all my pills ever since. I have one round pill that I cut in half with a pill splitter.

You probably did the right thing by not going right now. Considering that
you're feeling lousy and that there wouldn't be any food options for you,
I think you made a good choice.  Chin up.  It gets better....really. When you
start dropping weight like crazy and find yourself looking at a thin stranger
in the mirror, not having your fave foods will be a minor issue.  You'll still
make food choices all your life, but you will be able to eat most of the things
you love...just be prepared to not always want to!  I went running around
today and found a great sale on some nice work slacks....color me happy
to find that the size 12s fit!  Oh yeah!  There is no food in the world that tastes
half as good as those size 12s feel.

As everyone said, it does get better!  I am 2 years out and I will say that although I don't change my plans b/c of food.  I do seems to request doing other "family" things rather than going out to eat, etc.

As for the meds, I sympathize!  I have found that I gag on pills that are not coated or are large.  I recently has plastic surgery and developed c. diff so flagyl was prescribed.  It is nasty tasting no matter what!  (All antibiotics make me lose my appetite and nauseous.) Here's what worked for me....I used sugar free boston cream pie pudding.  I mixed the crush pill in 1 teaspon on pudding.  Then it took me 2 spoons to eat the whole things, but I take a scoop of the "pill & pudding" top it with a little bit of the regular pudding, and then a little fat free whipped readdi-whip.  Granted the reddi-whip is not the best idea, but it has a very strong taste and makes it tolerable.  B/c of the no appetite I am far from being able to eat near enough calories when on antibiotics so it is okay as far as calories for the day.  I will say that for quite a while after taking antibiotics I am unable to eat anything with the texture of pudding without throwing it up!
