It's not? Don't they have to actually open you up to do the surgery, and cut your stomach to make it smaller?

Kinda...it can be done lap or open.  They make a "pouch" about the size of an egg out of part of your stomach.  You will no longer have your pylorus involved in your gastric system...which means you MAY experience dumping.

More important to me, the "remnant" part of the stomach is just left sitting in your belly.  So, if you take Motrin for example, when it works it also thins the mucosal lining of your stomach, making you more susceptible to ulcers and such...with one major problem...there is no easy way to LOOK at remnant stomach to see if you have an ulcer or stomach acancer or anything else.

FINALLY...you are asking "RnY or Band?" on an RnY board.  Wanna guess what the majority of answers will be?!?

(There...I think I'm done now.)

I have known people who were successful with both. I also know people that have had complications/failures with both.  (Failure = they didn't do the work .. didn't use it as the tool that it is).

I, personally, am partial to the RNY, but that is only because I have had great success with it.  (And very few issues).

This is a really personal choice and you will find that a lot of people out there are insistant that the surgery that THEY had is the right one, but, really.... it's YOUR body and your decision.

The only advice I can give is talk to your doctor.. research, research, research.   I read everything I could find for like a year before I started the WLS process.  I watched I don't even KNOW how many youtube videos of people who had had the diffferent surgeries.  (I was partial to Divataunia).   I subscribed to several of the channels and kept up to see what issues THEY had with their surgeries.  I lurked here.  A lot.  I hung on Nik and Kelly and Nessa's every written word.  (Kinda creepy, when I think about it).

Good luck!!

I agree with Punkmine. I have a lapband and I have NOT been successful and am having an RNY on 9/19. Different things work for different people. I don' t know if there is anyway to know if you will be successful with the band but I know plenty of people are. Of course I'm still in a state of mind that I failed at surgery but on the surface I know it's not my fault. As some one else mentioned on here the only time I was succesfful was when I was throwing up all the time. I'd keep reading the different boards and see if you lean one way or the other.

Talking to a doctor who only sells one or two choices is merely subjecting yourself to sales pitches.  You need to talk to doctors who do DIFFERENT surgeries.

Pick the surgery first, then the doctor.

I'd like to address your comment here:

A lot of people do NOT insist that the surgery they had is the right one. Also.....

" (Failure = they didn't do the work .. didn't use it as the tool that it is).  "

This is a blanket statement that is not generally true when it comes to the lap band. The lap band is a tool, but when the tool doesn't work the way it is advertised to work then that is NOT the failure of the user.

I agree with teh statement "The lap band is a tool, but when the tool doesn't work the way it is advertised to work then that is NOT the failure of the user."  I do use it correctly.  I work ou****ch what I eat, etc. etc.  Its hard for some bodies.  We are all different.  Definately research.  Its a hard choice no matter whcih one you choose and a hard time adapting to living differently not that it is bad.  It takes time.  People think weight loss surgery is the easy way out when in fact, it's prob the hardest thing I have dealt with since I keep it quiet.

Good luck!

Run away from the band!   Failure rates are soaring for lapband patients.

I just revised to bypass after 2.5 yrs with the band and having problems.  I am very happy that I did the revision.

246 in Dec 2008 before banded 1/28/09 at 215 lbs, band crapped 9/09 at 170 lbs and struggled with it and regained to 203 revised to bypass on 8/1/11 and am very happy.

I initially wanted the lap band but after research and weighing all the pros and cons I decided on RNY. Didn't want a foreign thing in me that could mechanically fail or issues with fills and sweet spots or lack there of.  Ultimately, if it didn't work for me, I would not be able to get my insurance to pay to have it revised unless it was medically necessary.  YIKES!  I am VERY happy with my choice and results so far! I wouldn't change a thing and would do all again next week if I had to!!  My RNY is awesome!!

I would not get the band if you paid me.  Really.  I would rather have no WLS than a band.

I know some people have good success with it.  But the failure rate seems to high.  Somewhere I read that 80% of people must have a second surgery to have the band removed or replace in less than eight years.  Well good grief, I don't know how old you are, but I am under 40 and if I had a band and had to have it replaced every eight years, that would be several more surgeries in my lifetime!  Also, I see an awful lot of band folks converting to RNY after having lots of problems and not losing weight with the band.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

Read the revision board.  There are 4 current WL surgeries ~ be sure to research ALL 4 types.  I personally would not recommend the lapband surgery to my worse enemy.
