RNY or Lapband

for me picking RNY was really hard.. I wanted the lap band and I had the most knowledge of it and I know quite a few people who were (WERE) successful with it. Mr surgeon however set me straight and said that the failure rate is skyrocketing with the band and that with my bmi (56) it was not going to be worth my time, money, efforts to have something that wont give me the results I desserve. I think what scared me the most was the thought of giving up all my comfort foods and taking vits and changing my lifestyle so dramaticly, I was stuck in a dillusion that the band was the quick fix and I wouldnt have to change that much. I finnally broke down in a puddle of tears and said fine I will go with RNY and give up the sugar and not let food control me anymore! whew! I dont regret my choice for one moment I love my RNY!! somedays suck but they are like sunshine and rainbows compaired to my good days before.
This is just my story and my choice and you have to make yours based on what your capable of and what you feel is going to be better for you and make you the most successful in the end..
Best of Luck

I had the lapband in 2006 and really the only reason i lost weight is because I threw up all the time. I have two really close friends who have had the band as well, one was not successful and the other is but she throws up all the time. I had the RNY on the 10th so I am hoping this will be more successful than the band. To me the band was a waste of time, money and years.

I originally wanted to get the Lap band too, but I ended up going with the bypass for several reasons.  First, the weightloss is generally better with the bypass than the band.  With the bypass there is a suppression of hunger for a period of time after the surgery (~6 to 12 months).

I have had both.  Let me tell you that there is no way that I would go thru the band again.  RNY was my "fix" to my band failure and I wish I had done it 4 years ago.

I had Lap Band in October of 2009 and had nothing but problems.  I was sick the entire time I had the Lap Band,  with very little weight loss!!  I had my revision to gastric bypass on August 8, 2011 and couldn't be happier.  I have lost more weight  in 2 weeks with the bypass than I did with the band for 20 months!!

I too started with Lap Band surgery in 2006. Lost a little bit of weight in 3 years, then gained more weight back in the matter of months. A few people I know have the band and they eat and start coughing, choking, or throwing up. I remember those days. I had RNY two months ago, and only regret not having this surgery first. RNY surgery was actually way easier than the band. I would never recommend the band to anyone, but to each his own! Good luck.

I had lap band 8/2007. I lost minimal around 40+ lbs. I had complications on 8/2010. The port was kinked and they removed it and placed on other side. Then they couldn't get fluid in. So I had no restriction then I gave up. In the meantime I gained 22 lbs. I asked for revision since I have diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. I was told yes in 3 days. I couldn't be happier. The band requires a lot of discipline but does not always resolve co-morbidities and I want diabetes gone! I hope all the post help you make a good decision.

I am currently at 130 lbs 10 pounds below goal weight!

Revision on 06/30/16

I have a band and I haven't been very happy with it. When it is working correctly, it does work...but.....if I'm going to enjoy any kind of weight loss it usually means that the band has to be so tight that I feel pain in my chest when I'm "full" and I frequently spit up mucous or mucous and some of my food.  NOT pleasant. It has been very difficult - for me, at least - to find the "sweet spot"

A few times I've had food poisoning or a stomach virus and - here's a nasty side effect of a tight band - could NOT vomit so what would have been a 24 stomach bug ended up being days of diarrhea and feeling like sh*t while the bug worked it's way out the other end *ugh*

My ex-husband, on the other hand, had a RNY in '99.  He has since gained a lot of the weight back.  When I told him I got the band he said he wished he had gotten that instead because it could be adjusted when needed.

I think if I could do it all over again I would not get the band.  Yes, it's reversible but, really, aren't you looking for a forever solution?  me?  I think I would pick the sleeve over the RNY, though. Having a foreign object didn't bother me so much before I got the band, but now I'm a bit worried about having some foreign object in my body that could malfunction at some point in the future.

Take a look at all the surgeries, decide which one is best for you and then take the leap.  They all have potential side effects and you never know which ones you are going to get - if any.

Good luck,
Anne

Yep.  You'd never think the INability to really vomit would be so awful, but it is.  Most vomiting with the band (99% of the time, for me) is the food in the pouch, NOT the food that is in my stomach... so stuff that is causing me upset or giving me food poisoning, down there BELOW the band, is trapped in there.  No exit!  YUCK.

I hate my band so much, can I tell you?

I would get the VSG or the DS (I'm revising to DS) and no way in hell would I get an RNY.  I've had life with a pouch, it sucks!  Down with pouches!  (for me!)

If life with your band sucks, you are not alone and it's not your fault.  Check out the failed lap band group!
