Protein From Food Versus Protein Shakes

I have not drunk a protein shake or eaten any protein supplement since I finished the liquid phase in August 2004.   I think the thinking behind this at that time was that if we HAVE to get our protein from food, we will concentrate on eating protein first and not be dipping into carbs et****il our capacity allows us because we know we are getting enough from supplements - ie it encourages us to use our calorie intake wisely!!!!

I'm sure I didn't get my full protein complement when I first started eating solid food, but I know that I have no problem eating my 100gms of protein per day - it's a good long term habit!!!

I think there was less rigidity on this a few years ago than there is now, and I do believe that maybe supplements have their place in our diet in the early days but it is not a normal function to still be relying on them years out of surgery as a matter of course ie, when there is no reason for not making good choices and not eating protein first!!!

At this stage I think you will be doing well to get your protein (as much as you can manage) from whatever source you can keep down - good luck on finding what's right for you!!!

Oh.  I don't know how I forgot to mention this.  The thing that helped me most in the beginning was protein ice cream.  Check out theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com.

You are so early out.  You will find there is food you loved before RNY that you can't tolerate any more - it isn't just whey isolate protein products.

I tried dozens of types of protein and found eggface protein ice cream to be a godsend.  I can't get enough protein from food, even at 29 months out.  My pouch just won't cooperate.  I use whey isolate 2 times a day to get in enough protein for me (100gm).  I enjoy my protein hot & cold drinks, shakes, pudding, in greek yogurt, ice cream, green smoothies, etc.  I do believe it is an acquired taste.

I had trouble switiching from Splenda to Stevia, too, but now have conquered that one.

Got to have adequate protein and keep the carbs down - ketosis.  You don't get a 2nd chance to go through the rapid weight loss stage.  Your body will steal protein from vital organs (your heart is one) to function.  I didn't like it - but I did it and no regrets.

Pull up those big girl panties - you can do this.

Wynter, I know what you mean about the protein smell and aftertaste. I have also had trouble finding a shake I can tolerate. I think the RTD ones are the worst at having the bad smell and taste whereas the powder doesn't seem as bad. However, I did try a RTD protein shake today that I actually liked! IMO, it did not have the funky smell which is the worst thing for me to get past. I did notice a bit of the whey aftertaste which I think is pretty common for most whey protein, but it wasn't so bad and since I drink my shake for breakfast, eating lunch helps the aftertaste. Anyways, I tried GNC's Total lean swiss chocolate RTD and I actually liked it! Woo Hoo! I did not notice a funky whey protein smell (and believe me, I have a sensitive nose). The shake has:
  • 25 grams of high quality protein
  • 170 calories
  • 24 vitamins and minerals
  • Lactose Free

Ok so i am thinking..if i get some vanilla unjury protein powder i could make sf vanilla pudding and put it in there, or even chocolate pudding or make frozen choc. pudding bars and i can use the vanilla in any smoothie or shake with some added flavoring..choc..rasp...strawberry..orange.  So i am going to order a few samples of it.  also when i was in WW i had a recipe for SF vanilla pudding with some pumpkin added to it and some pumpkin pie spice,  It was awesome.  Much better of a snack 3 times a day then a glass of milk..lol and much more protein.  thanks for the ideas.

Yes, you can do that.  If you play around with the amount of protein powder and the amount of liquid you use, you'll find it changes the taste/texture, too.  So the label on the protein might say to put one scoop in eight ounces of liquid and that one scoop has 20 grams of protein, but if the protein taste seems to strong for you or it makes your pudding gritty, you can use just half a scoop.  Then you only get ten grams of protein.

It took me forever to find a protein that I liked.  Find some samples and just keep trying.  There are plenty of places to order samples from and I did that for months.  The only ones I can stand are About Time and Chike and I also like the ENS from celebrate.

Doctor, doctor, doctor them up!  I was getting to sick of protein shakes that they literally made me nauseated and I had to plug my nose to drink them.  Then I started trying some protein shake recipes and am in love with protein shakes!

This morning I tried a mocha shake that reminded me of the iced coffees I used to be able to drink.  The other day I had strawberry cheesecake.  I'm in loooove!
