First cupcake since surgery--did not dump--and that scares me a little!

Ohhh Berlyfly!!!! Thank you for this post!  I have the same thoughts!!  I decided when I did this that there was going to be no more "dieting" - it was going to be a lifestyle change

With that means I don't need to completely avoid every bad food out there.  My problem was I needed to learn how to eat in moderation! And it feels great when just a few bites of this or that is satisfying!

Happy to know others have the same view and is working for you as well!

I'm a big time "dumper", but if I have 1 bite or slowly nibble on a small piece than usually I'm fine.

Shannon, did you enjoy the cupcake? Hope so. I had one today myself. I had the surgery to help me get healthly. I plan on living my life the way I want. If I want a cupcake, I take that into account with my eating and exercising for the next day or two. I don't deprive myself. I have been about the same weight give or take 5 lbs for the past year and that is with having sweets once in a while-not everyday. Enjoy life!!

I don't dump often, but I may if I overdo it.

IMO you are better off not knowing then testing the limits especially early out.  I didn't find out I didn't dump until over a year out.

Woo, lol, Did I start something or what?!  thank you for all your opinions and observations--I especially like it when people at all different points post surgery post, so I can get a good wide look at things.

I had this surgery to "fix" my gastroparesis and to eliminate my high blood pressure and cholesterol. However this is a life style change and I refuse to diet every again. I do treat myself to something sweet once in a while. I actually had a small, and I mean small, maybe 3 bites, of my daughter's birthday cake last week. I keep some bite size candy bars at my desk at work so if the sweet tooth hits that day, I take and have 1, but just 1, not the normal 10 or so that I would have had in the past. I actually crave the healthier foods now, lots of fruits tend to help when I want something sweet. But I am not going to deprive myself. I have done well controlling myself when it comes to the foods that people feel we should not be eating because of surgery. I am not a dumper which is a good thing and a bad thing. People will feel how they will feel. Everyone has their opinions, which they are entitled to. My surgeon even agrees that you should not deprive yourself, but learn moderation. I am not going to feel guilty because I eat a mini candy bar or a small slice of cake. As long as you learn self control and moderation, why not treat yourself every once in a while.

nothing wrong with a little treat once in a while...don't beat yourself up over it....are you truly going to live your life never having another bite of anything sweet, highly unlikely! you have to learn moderation to succeed. And I would not let anyone make u feel bad about it,  the previous post that basically said you are jeopardizing your RNY is holding a drink in his picture so I would not put to much merit into what he said,

Thats why i try not to drop advice here becuase its taken the wrong way. And I wasent trying to make her feel bad.

I too hope you enjoyed the cupcake! I too had sworn off all bad food right after I had surgery. Then I woke up and realized this wasn't a diet, this was a for LIFE thing. I made the decision to LIVE life, not just exist on jerky and apples. Much like I made the decision to live rather than be fat for forever.

Make sure everyone is sitting down for this next revelation- I had TWO cupcakes yesterday. Yes. 2! And guess what? I got on the scale this morning down 2lbs from yesterday (today is my actual weigh in day). *gasp* I also had a few chips to pile it on!

Do I eat like this every day. Heck no! But its okay to live a little after eating turkey sausage for breakfast, tuna for lunch, and salmon for dinner. Just sayin!

Oh my...two cupcakes!

I wouldn't necessarily encourage the connection between eating cupcakes and chips with being down on the scale. Even though it's funny how that happens, for some of us it simply doesn't. I was vigilant up until about 18 months post op. The minute I loosened up a bit, the scale did not go down, it went up DESPITE the fact that I was still working out like a maniac.

But you're right. Life happens. But one thing dinosaurs like me need to realize is that there are psychological stages to this thing. The "I'm never going to eat the evil food again EVAH!" stage is one we need to go through in order to get to the other good stuff that awaits us. I went through it, you went through it and they will too.

Someone oughta write a book.
