When can you start driving?

The reason I ask is that I live alone and I don't want to keep asking friends to drive me about.

I was driving the day after I came home from the hospital.  But, if you're taking a lot of pain meds, I'd urge you to impose on someone to help with any driving needed.  I take a variety of meds, and on days I don't "feel 100%", I just don't drive, or have some do the errand if needed immediately.  Each patient is different.  You do need some form of support post op, and my surgeon would NOT do surgery unless he actually met the support person available to his patient.  If you do live alone, find someone to rely on. You may need to see the surgeon for some short term post op concerns, get supplies, help with household chores, etc.  A support system is very important, especially in the first week or two post op. I had bypass surgery done August 1st and drove on August 4th (short distance) and drove fine on August 5th.  Just don't be on pain meds.     I drove the next day after my gall bladder removal surgery.

246 in Dec 2008 before banded 1/28/09 at 215 lbs, band crapped 9/09 at 170 lbs and struggled with it and regained to 203 revised to bypass on 8/1/11 and am very happy.

For me it was after being off narcotics and when I felt confident I had the strength to control my vehicle on the icy roads that are so common in MN winter.  I had my surgery on Friday, Feb. 13 and drove about 60-90 minutes each way to and from my first post-op appointment on Wed., Feb. 18.

Thanks everyone! I'll see how I do à la pain meds and go from there.
