new to this
i just had RNY surgery on Monday, September 19th and already I'm feeling a bit defeated. Before I was released from the hospital my dr said I could move on to Full Liquids. Well, I tried that once and it didn't go over well at all :( I felt SO SICK after trying to have a protein shake made with skim milk ( 3 sips to be exact). So I'm back on Clear Liquids only and I'm bored already. I know it's an adjustment, but I'm aggravated. I'm afraid to try anything new but I know I have to... for a WHILE!
Any pointers?
Any pointers?
Just take it one day at a time....now let me elaborate
I have not had my surgery yet but I do know plenty of people who have
One of my co-workers said that she felt like she had destroyed her life after her surgery because of the pain but over time she eventually got better. And even knowing the pain she went through she would do it all over again. Remember that what you are feeling is only temporary.
Now- if you keep having trouble keeping liquids down, do not hesitate to call your surgeon.

I had my RNY on 8/31/11. To be perfectly honest, I am STILL struggling with getting in my protein shakes. For the first 4 days, I couldn't hardly tolerate anything by mouth other than a tiny bit of G2 Gatorade. I felt horrible...I don't do well with pain meds. When I got those completely out of my system, I felt better.
Don't kick yourself about your taste buds. I am terrified to introduce new things. I have a VERY grouchy pouch. I can eat something one day...then two days later it revolts when I eat it. One HUGE problem I have is taking my time. Tiny sips...with your chicken broth...I added a couple of regular saltine crackers...I couldn't eat much of them...but it did help give me a little texture in the full liquid stage.
Hang in there, I promise it gets better. I still have lots of issues, but we have to deal with them.
Good luck!

Did you get an Rx for Zofran or something for the nausea? I found that made a huge difference. Just keep plugging away at it. If you're doing clear liquids, try crystal light lemonade, or rasp lemonade with Unflavored Jay Robb Whey Protein and lots of ice. I found the cold soothing and an easy way to get 26gm of protein in.
I had my surgery a bit before you on 8/29 and I promise you it gets a bit better every day. I still struggle, but I know the pay off in the end is so worth the journey I am on.
The first few weeks are the hardest, but it's only a couple of weeks. Goes by fast, it really does. Don't be afraid to try new things - trying new things for me turned out to be fun, especially later on, cooking more and planning my meals (stupid as it may sound).
How is the shake with water? I have not touched milk as (I know I am contradicting myself) I have been afraid to try it. I still drink mine with water.
Were you put back on clear liquids or did you move yourself back? Sometimes a result you get once with your pouch doesn't happen again - granted you just had surgery. Take your time and don't get discouraged!

Well, today I tried the shake with almond milk and so far so good. I only had 2oz, but at least it was something.
I TOTALLY put myself back on clear liquids...but with today's good luck I might even try a low-fat soup for dinner.... 2 oz of course! lol
One thing I'm not doing is getting my fluids in. It just seems like I'm going to constantly sip... which I think I might be. But I gotta do what I gotta do... I'm learning.
Thanks for the comments :)

What made you sick about it - the texture, sweetness, flavor? Maybe try another full liquid that doesn't have what ever made you sick. I don't really like any protein drinks but some are more tolerable than others. You are just out of surgery so you don't have to push the protein ...just do what you can. I got about 15 grams the whole day on my first week out. I took Zofran for the nausea too. Try a full liquid without additional protein and see how it goes. Good Luck.
after i drank about 3 sips I starting burping a lot.. then started cramping, felt kind of weak and I just wanted to lay down. I felt horrible... I thought I might vomit, but luckily I just kept burping and eventually it passed. I really think it was the skim milk that did it. So, I think I'm skipping milk for a while!!
Thanks ;)
Thanks ;)
