Greek Gods Greek (style) yogurt *Warning*

My husband was nice enough to try to buy me some Greek yogurt yesterday. He's not accustomed to looking at labels, but knew I'd like the flavor he chose, so home it came. Well I went to eat it last night and was shocked at what I saw.It was a brand I wasn't familiar with, so I checked the protein content and saw it was only 8 grams, which is much lower than my usual Greek yogurts so I went on to check calories and sugar. Much to my surprise it was 310 calories and 34 grams of sugar in a cup!!! I've NEVER seen a yogurt with such terrible stats, let alone a Greek yogurt. So I look closer at the label and find the fine print that said it was Greek "style" yogurt. I guess that is the difference. I just thought it was a tricky way to present it and that some unwitting person could really wind up ill with that sugar content.

I guess this serves as a reminder to read those labels!!

Hi! I did have the lower body lift, breast lift and augmentation. I'm still feeling pretty rough. It's been 2-1/2 weeks and I'm still rather swollen in my thighs (they did some lipo) and there is this strange numbness/pain through the thighs and my rear. On the bright side--my stomach is flat! And my boobs are where they belong. The results are really an unexpected surprise. I'm excited to see once all the swelling is gone and once these stupid drains are out of the way!!

Thanks for checking on me!

I hate it when companies do stuff like that!  What I have learned, though, is that we always have to read labels carefully.

I understand the reason for watching sugars due to dumping among other reasons. So why is it that we can eat Greek yogurt which tends to have 15-19g of sugar? Is it a different kind of sugar or maybe the high sugar content is offset by the other good ingredients?? This has always confused me.

That's how I found out how many grams of sugar I could have without dumping.  Accidentally ate one shortly after surgery that had 19 grams of sugar.  No problem.  When I went over that number it was dump city.   So thinking that if you aren not dumping when you eat them then you probably have to go higher than that as well.  Or you don't dump on sugars.  It happens.

I suppose it also might have to do with a portion of that sugar being milk sugars.  Not sure about that factor.

Yeah. My NUT tried to tell me to eat a specific brand of greek yogurt. I suspect it was also "greek style". I picked up the container (she has a bunch of empty containers she shows as examples) and looked at it - 27 GRAMS OF SUGAR!! I looked at her and said "would this be terrible for me to eat? Couldn't I dump on this?!" She looked at it and responded something like "oh, um, well, yeah, okay I guess that wouldn't be a good one". Um - thanks lady - aren't you supposted to be helping me learn to eat better? Yikes.

I agree with the Kelly - we just always have to look at the label!

I hate it when companies mislead their consumers. They do it out of greed because Greek yogurt has really taken off in the last couple of years and they want to trick unsuspecting consumers.  I'm glad that you caught it in time.

Lucky enough I prefer the plain yogurt!! But I will keep looking at my labels when I find a new product :)

Yup. I guess it's true that we can never assume anything about labeling.
And I think that even if it had said just "Greek Yogurt"  instead of "Greek Style Yogurt" you could still have wound up with the same problem. After all, for it to be truly, legitimately greek yogurt they'd have to ship it over from Greece, right?
