Hi! I just had my first meeting with my sugeon, and It seems that my insurance doesn't know its' arse from its' elbow, and won't give my surgeon's office a straight answer on anything, I had been planning on having a VSG, but they say now that they don't cover that, although it says they do on their website. Also, they didn't require a supervised diet, but now, apparently, they require a supervised diet of one year. But they won't actually admit it. I'm letting my surgeon's office fight with them about what they require. I'm just doing my part by getting appointments made. I've got appointments for a cardiac eval and the psych eval this month, and the EGD next month. I still need a date for my sleep study.

Everything feels like it's going so fast, yet if my surgeon is correct in his guess, I still have 11 months to wait before I can have my surgery. Is it normal for everything to happen so fast? I'm in a whirl.

All my research for the past two months has been on the VSG, so I'd really like to hear people's thoughts about the RNY. Any recommendations or warnings? How long does healing from the surgery tend to take?

There are seven days in a week and "some day" is not one of them.

I can't answer most of your questions since my surgery isn't until tomorrow. My entire experience has taken just about 7 months and most of it was the 180 days of being medically supervised. The ball didn't really start rolling until the 180 days were up and I got approval from insurance. Hope this helps a bit and good luck on your journey!!

WHAT TO HEAR FAST?
I was 7 weeks from referal to surgury!! (seems I was doing a test 2  times a week or giving blood!).
I never concidered VSG only RNY..in my pre op orintaion class their was 18 folks and out of them I was the only RNY and 1 Lap Band also all others were VSG ...so the day of my operation in recovery ward I saw the 2 gals for pre op and the were in so much pain and crying!
I never even hit the pain button unless I wanted to sleep!!
VSG must be getting to be popular and I think its because some are botherd with the gut re-routing!!
Am very pleased and lost 24 lbs in 15 days and just started stage 3 !
and only take pepsid and a blood pressur med plus vitimins and calicum!
good luck

I went to my orientation on April 21st or 29th.. I can't remember.  I lost the preop weight and had my surgery by July 1st.
Best thing I have ever done!  It's been 15 months, I have had no complications (knock on wood), I went from a size 24/26 to a 4 (and have been maintaining a weight of 144ish for months now).  I can eat pretty much anything.  (I had a banana and a couple of pizza rolls for dinner).
As far as recovery, I was off pain meds when I came home from the hospital.  I took Tylenol a couple of times.  I dumped the Lortab down the drain after a couple of weeks because I didn't need it.   I never suffered from any of the gas pain I read about or anything.

So far, so good!

I am a revision so my insurance stuff was different.  However it only took 8 business days to get the thumbs up from the insurance!  My first surgery I fought with them for 7 months!  When I asked my financial./insurance specialist in my DR office how long and what hoops she thought I'd have to jump through, I quote... "it depends on who's desk it ends up on and what mood they are in when they get it"  I laughed, and she swore she was serious!!  SO with that said, maybe when they submit your paperwork your insurance person will have just had a great weekend and a cupcake...Good luck~
