Just wow!

I'm being bad.  I am not eating as well as I know I can or should.  I am not out of control, I just am not always making the best choices.

I think that the fact that I eat so little of everything that I DO eat it just can't be bad.  Isn't that the point of this surgery?  I be able to eat things, even things that are not so great for me, but do very small portions.

I make really good choices most days and most of the time.  I don't want to have guilt for having a few bites of a desert not and then.  I eat carbs, but I monitor how much and what kind.  I try not to eat bread, pasta, and rice and I am pretty good about that and I am proud that I have given that stuff up.  I eat frozen meals like LC or WW for lunch, but only half of them.  I eat fruit roll ups, but the real fruit kind with out added sugar.

I guess I just worry that I am not being strict enough.  But I don't want to be totally strict about my diet all the time, but I don't want to gain my weight back either.  So do I have to be totally strict in order not to regain?  I guess I will find out as I go along.

I don't believe you have to be super strict and eliminate all treats in order to avoid gaining weight back.  Honestly, if you ate almost all healthy food but allowed yourself half a cupcake and one slice of pizza a month do you think you would gain weight?  Of course it would depend on what else you ate but if everything else was "WLS perfect" you wouldn't gain weight from those treats.

Sometimes I have a hard time working out the right balance.  If I have a treat every once in a while, it won't hurt me but if I have a "once in a while treat" several times a week, that might cause problems.  I think the right balance is something we all have to work out for ourselves.

That's the thing Kelly, I don't have a NUT never have.  My doctor give me a half sheet of paper each time I go for a check up and it tells me what foods I can add back into my diet.  He does not tell me how much or how often or how many calories.  I just have to guess.  He never even gave me a protein range.  I'm not saying I'm stupid and I don't know WHAT to eat or when I just wish I had more direction.  Should I consider hot wings an OK meal cause it was protein first?  It is a better choice then a burger right?

I just know up to now it has all worked so far, but will it continue to work?  That I need to find out.

It may depend on what you put on the wings, but in general wings should be fine and so should a burger, really.  I'm not talking about a Big Mac.  But a lean burger, especially if you skip the bun, is just fine.  And I think the bun is fine too, really, as long as you aren't eating lots of buns every day.

For your protein range, I can tell you that the ASMBS suggests 1.1 gram protein per kilogram of ideal body weight, which works out to about half a gram per pound of what you should weight, not what you do weigh.  My surgeon says my ideal weight is 140 which means I need about 70 grams of protein a day.  Although some people seem to need more in order to keep their protein levels good, so if you labs indicate you need more protein, then you should get more.

You are the person that has to live with the way you eat and if you don't find a way to eat that you can live with you won't be happy and you will probably wind up eating more or things that you "shouldn't" because of guilt or just feeling like giving up.
I heard someone say that as long as they ate right 80% of the time they could afford the other 20%.  What you eat depends on your personality, what foods may be a problem, or trigger, for you, how much you want to weigh and how hard you are willing to work to get at and stay at that weight.  Some people are comfortable weighing a bit more if it means more leeway in their eating and others are more diligent because they like weighing less.
If you don't feel like you are getting enough guidance you could always find a NUT that specializes in WLS patients and make an appointment, maybe see them once or twice to get a good idea of the best way for you to eat.
Because I dump, and because I feel I have a problem with refined carbs, I avoid all sugar.  That doesn't mean I don't eat treats.  I enjoy sugar free things like pudding and ice cream.  If I add protein to it I feel good about eating it.  If I eat too many carbs I don't feel good, like I am starting to dump but not as severe as it could be, so I watch my carbs.
I have years of dieting, all failed obviously, as well as my first WLS, to know what works for me as far as eating and losing weight.  Not doing so well at the maintenance part yet but I am working on it.  I think the problem with maintaining is that after a year of eating a certain way I got very comfortable with it and it is hard for me to make changes.  I know what foods will sit well with me and won't cause dumping.  I know the amounts to eat so I won't feel stuffed and bloated.  I know how long I can go between eating and not get too hungry.  I felt like I could live with the way I was eating and not feel deprived.  I thought that I would transition seamlessly right into maintenance but it didn't work out that way.
It's all a matter of trial and error to find out what works for us and our goals.  You are still feeling your way.  It will become easier for you as time goes on.
