I know the vitamin deal has been beatin completely into the ground but i was wondering what others are using as a multivitamin?  I use the centrum chewables but would like to eventually check into swallowable multi's in the coming months.  My teeth are horrible (tmi)and its hard to chew them sometimes.  And i do suck them. lol  I have searched for the ASMBS guidelines for vitamins and can't find the link anymore.  So i don't have a clue where to go.  Any of the links i have found to the ASMBS guidelines page have sent me to a new page on the ASMBS site.  Would like to shop around for the multi but don't know exactly what i need for each vitamin...thanks...

Here is what I look for:

I look for vitamins A – E, which are usually listed in alphabetical order on the label.  There should be a bunch of B vitamins in there, which might be listed as B1, B2, etc or might be listed by other names like thiamine and riboflavin.  Unless you’re looking at a gummy vitamin (which I promise won’t have everything we need), they should all be in there.  You don’t have to learn all the hard-to-pronounce names of the B vitamins unless you want to.  It should have vitamin K, too.

Look for copper, zinc and selenium.  If you want a multi with iron, look for that too.  However, you can take a multi without iron and take iron at another time.  I think that’s easiest anyway, because then you can take your calcium and multi at the same time if you want, which means fewer times a day that you have to take vitamins.

Next to each ingredient it will show you how much of that ingredient is in the multi.  You don’t need to know how much vitamin A, how much vitamin E, etc we need  in there.  Next to the amount, it will have a percentage (it’s the percent of the Recommended Daily Allowance that is in there).  It will look like this: vitamin D  400 IU  100%.  Just go down the list and see if most of them are 100% or at least close to that.

If most of the ingredients say 100%, you need to take two a day.  You need a total of 200% of most things.  So if you have a vitamin that only has 50% of most things, you’d need four a day.

Right now I am taking the Meijer brand adult multi, which is equivalent to Centrum.

thanks Kelly as usual, i knew you would pull through. I will take that guideline page and bookmark it..wonderful thing that bookmarking..ha!  are the vitamins you take pretty big?  I was looking at some complete equate that are suppose to be like the centrums and they didn't look to big. I CAN swallow pills but i tell you i ate baby aspirin for many years because i couldn't...lol

Yeah, I'd say they are pretty big.  About like Centrums.  A typical multivitamin size.  You could cut them in half.

If you want something small, or just easier to swallow, both Celebrate and Bariatric Advantage have multi capsules.  But with the BA ones, you have to take three a day and with Celebrate you have to take six a day.  But they are smaller.

My dietitan's rule is at least 20 vitamins and minerals in it, and most should have 100% of your daily requirement. I take 2 store brand Centrum Silver tabs twice daily. If you have a Walgreens in your area, their store brand of Centrum Silver tabs come in a bit smaller tab that makes swallowing easier!
