hey all. i am 8 months RNY post op. i was taking nexium after surgery and everything was fine and well. then i tried to stop it because the 6 months we were to take it was up and i got horrible pains. constant burning, and acid in my throat. so they put me on protonix because its literally 50 dollars a month cheaper than nexium. and now im having nausea, and every night i feel like i have a lump in my throat.

does this sound like reflux to you all? has any other RNYer had this issue? i need to call the DR and have him state the nexium is medically neccesary so suffering till monday!

thanks for the replies! -Nicole

Acid reflux usually goes away for almost all RNY patients. THAT SAID, I've met 3-4 patients at support group patients who have been on Prilsec long term.  These people said they had some reflux symptoms when they went off Prilosec, but the issues went away when  on Prilosec. I know my surgeon has publically stated that a minor percentage of his patients need to be on Prilosec on a long term basis.  But is by far a majority of patients.  You might consider Prilosec as another med to try to get relief.  Get a script, as Prilosec is either OTC or script--script being twice the strenght as OTC.  DAVE

I started Prilosec in 1998 and used it for several years. Then, when my GERD worsen, I was increased to 2 pills a day. And later, I was switched to Nexium when it became available, and have been on it for many years. (isn't it time for the patent to expire?) My wl surgeon keeps his patients on acid reducers for a year and at that time, I want to wean to Prilosec (2 pills day).

Nexum's makers do offer up to $50 discount on monthly prescription x 12 months. Go to thepurplepill.com to see if you qualify. (not based on income).
Also some people have rebound reflux after stopping acid reflux meds. Weaning off over 3 weeks (5-6 weeks for long term users)is suggested to decrease rebound.
