Question : For those that know about Diverticulitis...Once you have it they tell you to stay away from nuts, seeds, corn etc...Is that forever? Will it come back if you eat it??

I  have it, but I still eat some things that they say not to. But depending on the day, I could show signs like pain and feeling sick along with the fast running to the bathroom. But then there are days that it doesn't bother me. So if I were you, I wouldn't try a whole lot at first, maybe a little and see if it doesn't hurt. Good luck.

It took a while before I could eat nuts without the stomach/colon issues. I get pain if I try anything with seeds. Made that mistake adding strawberries to my protein shake. I eat corn with no problem, but it's rare that I even eat corn. I have dramtically increased my fiber intake to help my stomach/colon though.

This is all new to me. Had 2 recent flare ups the last few months. Went about a month with no corn etc but tonight I had taco meat and it was in there and I ate it. Now Im feeling the pain already in my left side.....Oh no what did I do...Last two times I ended up in hospital getting antibiotics... Anything I can do from home? Or does it require a dr each time? I have no idea what to do...

These foods do NOT cause diverticulitis.  They get trapped in the outpouching and trap feces in there.  That leads to inflammation and possible rupture.

THAT is why you should stay away from them.

I have diverticulosis and have had a couple flare ups where it turned into diverticulitis, but honestly I  eat the things they said to be careful of and really have never had a problem.  I think it helps that I eat yogurt and fiber, which keeps things moving, so they don't have as much of a chance to get stuck in the little areas.

So, diverticulosis is the condition of having diverticula in your colon.  Diverticulitis is the inflammation of one of these pockets.  Once they are there - they are there forever.

The thing about seeds, nuts, etc is that they are small enough to become stuck in these pockets and CAUSE the inflammation.  Remove those from the equation and the inflammation should happen less often.

Since the pockets are still present, you can't say diverticulitis will be gone forever -there's always the chance of it happening again.  You can lessen the frequency with your dietary choices.

My wife's doctor said mostly that is a old wives tale. Everybody handles foods differrently. So trail and error
