Need a little help

I had my surgery on 11-29-11. In the last week I have had terribly painful gas. I am only allowed to do protein drinks and clear fluids so far (for the first 4 weeks). I have not changed anything, just drinking the protein from the doctor's office and Crystal Light drinks throughout the day. It is very uncomfortable and impossible to bend over. Has anyone else experience this (I'm sure I am not alone). And if so what have you been able to do and what works?

I had my surgery on the same day! Well, everyone's doctor seems to do things a little different, I was on ckears 1st week, then full liquids 2nd week, now pureed. My gas was bad the ist week, and each time I transitioned to different type of food it would grumble loudly. Not so bad now. I wonder if it's because you are still doing all liquids, because that is when I had my worst of the gas.
As for the pain, it was worse the 1st week to 10 days, now I can move so much easier. I had asked my surgeon 1st day after surgery for an abdominal binder and boy did that help! I am still wearing it, but probably don't really need to. The doc told me the pain is always bad on the left side because that is where they do most of work and that  is where the biggest incision and suture is, and within a month's time it would be much better. If you don't have a binder, look into getting one. Pharmacies like Walgreens have them I believe. And just be a little more patient, take pain med if needed. As for the gas, you might want to call the office and ask them if you can take anti-gas med like gas-x. My doctor didn't want me to, don't know why, but I know others who have been told it's ok.
Also, might want to try warm fluids, like warm tea, decaf coffee, warmed up chocolate protein drink to help soothe the tummy. Hope something helps you soon!

Congrats on your surgery.

A couple of things come to mind. First, gas after surgery is not unusual, and walking helps a lot.

The second thing I would ask, are your protein shakes milk based? I became lactos I tolerant after surgery and it messed with my intestines when I would drink milk based shakes. Did great with water or soy..

Yes it is normal it is due to the gas build up and the best thing I have found to help move it is to walk walk walk and sometimes lay on one side then the other it helps to get the gas pocket to move and .. well come out .. lol you might also ask your WLS if u could take MOM (milk of magnisia) to help get the gas out.. But I found that the walking and moving around is what works the best... Hope this helps ya.

I remember that part...My husband got soy milk for me and it got better.  Your incisions will be healed by week 4 so you should be on to pureed food soon.

It sounds like you may be lactose intolerent or maybe the protein drink you are using doesn't agree with you.
Maybe try some soy milk and soy protein or even a different protein drink and see if that helps.

I agree with the walking .. it's really the best thing for the gas.  Also, Gas-X makes strips for the tongue (like the Listerine strips) that I find help me out a lot with Gas...... good luck!
