Curious, sleeve surgery tomorrow...

 Hello,

I have not frequented this board, as I am slated to have the sleeve performed tomorrow.  With my surgery it is possible to go into a bypass later down the road.  I think the sleeve will be enough for me, but I am curious.  How has the complications been, and how effective do you feel your surgery is?  I was worried about dumping syndrome, messing with the intestines, malabsorption, and not being able to take Nsaids if needed.  Did these issues (or others) turn out to be a problem for ya'll?

Not being able to take NSAIDS is a huge issue for me.  I have a lot of back pain, which I did not have before surgery though I doubt it's related, and NSAIDS would be so helpful.

I have had a number of nutritional deficiencies due to the malabsorption but I get labs done every six months and they are easy to treat.

I've dumped a frew times but it's easy to prevent if I just limit my sugar intake.

My surgery has been very successful, I am a little below my goal weight.

I curious as well, i am scheduled for a RYN in Feb and I am contemplating between Sleeve and RYN. a little history, I have thalassmia which is a iron blood disorder and I have had knee surgery, which in future will need to be operated on again and probably need pain meds when older. So i am wondering if RYN is right for me and with the Sleeve i cannot find anyone one on the Sleeve blog that has maintained the weight loss or that is a Vet is that kind of wierd!
With RYN will my Thalassmia be a problem? HELP

 Hi,

I have been regularly reading posts and there are a ton of people who made goal and maintained.  Somebody posted earlier today that she is 2 years out, lost 160 pounds, and having no difficulty with maintaining.  I actually don't see the other kind of poster- ones who lost then regained significant amounts.  I also routinely see people who hit their goal.  Now I have a lot to lose and I would love to think the sleeve would be enough, but RNY may be step two...

With Beta Thalassemia Minor (which is what I assume you have since you are still alive as an adult), you can register false anemia in blood tests.  Taking iron supplements with Thalassemia can be problematic, so please make sure to bring this up with your surgeon prior to surgery.  It can also cause an enlarged spleen, yet another reason to make sure he/she knows before they dive in there.

Yes, the inability to take NSAIDs has been more troublesome than I expected (but I also expected that my knee pain would improve MUCH more than it did after losing the weight). Nothing else has been an issue. Keep in mind that the VITAMIN malabsorption with RNY is  permanent but the caloric malabsorption is only good for up to 2 years ( and frequently lasts only 12-18 months).

Thank-you, Lora
So with the caloric malabsorption being only 12-18 months its the same as VGS its just the work you put in to it to keep yourself slim with a maintaining a healthy  weight. I just worried my thalassimia will be a issuse since, iron is a huge part of my life style now!

Oh, I didn't even know the caloric part went away.  The sleeve is permanent, but it can stretch with time allowing for greater intake.

The pouch also expands a bit during the first two years, but, yes, the caloric malabsorption is only temporary (a very small amount is permanent, but we're talking like 10% or so)..  So it helps you get the weight off (which s why the weight loss is faster with RNY than sleeve) but after 2 years both surgeries rely on smaller portions and healthy eating habits only.

If you are having the sleeve and need a revision down the road there is also the DS, whi*****ludes the sleeve and then intestinal malabsorption.  The malabsorption is greater, so the need for supplements is greater, too, but the maintenance stats are the best of all surgeries and you can take NSAIDs, too.
