Lost almost 40 lbs prior to surgery ( was told to lose 20). Of course I followed what the dietician prescribed as I'm sure you will too. They'll probably want you to eat LEAN / lowfat proteins, limit your carbs, and cut out sweets (including sweet sugary drinks). Beyond the diet, the things that seemed to really help were brisk exercise, at least once a day, often twice. Don't eat anything late. I think in my case it was to not eat any later than 6 PM (I go to bed early, and get up early). Do get in your FLUIDS and FIBER, and DO eat your healthy snacks to keep your metabolism from slowing.
I had to lose 36lbs. before surgery. What I did was used myfitnesspal.com to journal everyday. I ate between 1200 and 1400 calories. I stuck with low carb/lowfat. I also exercised at least 6 days/week. Because I was hoping that I could have surgery before end of year my mind was set. I lost it in 2 months. Because I had lost the weight I didn't have to do 2 weeks of protein shakes before surgery. I only had to do a liquid diet 2 days prior. I had surgery last week:) It may seem like it's hard to do but just set your mind to it and think of the prize! Good luck!
I lost like 35 # before surgery cause I had to wait 6 months for insurance anyway. My doctor put me on phentermine pills, they worked fabulous. I then just pretended to be a bariatric patient eating the way I should if I had the surgery, maybe a little more, lol. All in all it was worth it cause I am down 50 some pounds now.
