Protein Bars.

Is it bad that I am able to tolerate protein bars so early out? I tried one the other day.. started with a bite to see how I would do and then ate about 1/2 of it. The one I tried was Luna Protein Cookie Dough. I have heard about people not being able to tolerate these for 3-6 months after surgery and I am almost 5 week out..

Am I doing wrong by trying these? I think I should find ones with less sugar/carbs (Saw this at whole foods and had a coupon) but this is more of a general question about bars and using them now.

Whichever ones you try just make sure they have good amounts of protein in them.  Far too many of them are just fancy candy bars.

I personally like the Oh, Yeah! bars which are only 190 calories and 15 gms of protein.  Which is not to say that they can be much too much for me, as they are very snackable!  I have to be stern with myself!

The South Beach bars are good, too, but not as high in protein content

Thanks! I will look into those bars as well!

Here are the general stats on the Luna Protein bars from the Luna website:

Each 1.6 oz (45g) LUNA Protein bar has around 170-190 calories with 12g protein and 3g fiber, along with essential nutrients women need. It is high in calcium and folic acid, and is a good source of vitamin D, iron, fiber and antioxidants (vitamins A, C and E). Each bar has 6-9g fat and 13-15g sugar depending on the flavor.

I like the Luna bars, but as it states, some of them have pretty low protein content.

Just use them sparingly.  It's far too easy to enjoy them out-of-hand and then its a slippery slope to grazing on them.  (The voice of experience here, I promise)

Good luck

Hey!! Glad things seem to be going well! I have seen some very low suger protein bars at Costco as well called Detour Lower Sugar. I bought them before surgery and liked them a lot! I didn't have any trouble with the Luna Protein bar. I don't think there is anything wrong with you being able to drink 11oz protein drink in 30 minutes. I was able to do that about a week out.

I think with the liquids it is more about what your comfort level is than anything. I feel like if it doesn't give discomfort then you are doing just fine!

I had RNY 12/5 and I was able to tolerate the Premier Protein drinks over 30min w/in a week after surgery. I am much better w/fluids then w/solid intake. It just takes longer to eat meals. I have gone on/off pain medicine since surgery. I tried to stop it completely just before Christmas weekend and ended up w/so much pain, I could hardely move. Got a refill, took it for another week & am weening off again. Really just using it maybe 1x during the day & at night. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Personally I tend to stay away from the protien bars. I have tried the sugar free ones but have to watch for the maltatols or sweetners. It is about what you are able to tolerate and advice of your nutritionist is great to. They know your surgery and can usually give great advice.
I worry about long term what is best, it is hard to know and really that is what makes these forums so useful. To say what we are all doing... Hopefully get some good advice to ponder. General guidance on what has worked and ideas.

For my protien needs I tend to use the powder when I am not able to tolerate the other natural protien foods. Being out a year now I am able to tolerate most meats. Although usually lean meats. I do not eat hamburger because I have tried a bite here or there and one bite and it has never agreed.

Hugs

Quest bars are very low in sugar(only sold online)
Supreme bars are really good, low in sugar and haven't messed with my tummy like most bars do. I get them at Wal Mart for pretty cheap.
I don't think it's bad, but you do want to watch the carb and sugar contents. a lot of bars are just glorified candy bars.
I like them for when I'm on the go, they are better options then fast food.

I could eat part of a protein bar pretty early out.  I ate Pure Protein bars.  200 cal. and 20 grams of protein per bar. They did not have any nuts so they were easy to chew. They were low sugar.  I did not feel they tasted like candy bars so that was a positive. They were a good way to get protein in.

Now that I can eat more I don't eat a protein bars much.  They are something I carry in the car or purse in case I am away from home/work for a long period and need to eat.

There is noting wrong with protein bars especially early out.  After a while they should not be your main source of protein.  Dense protein is important so that you stay fuller longer.
