Just curious...how many of you follow the food pyramid guidelines? My Nut gave me one right after surgery but I don't really follow it. I am wondering if I should pay more attention to it and maybe I would lose a little faster. For thos eof you that do follow it, how much weight are you or did you lose per week?

I thought they did away with the food pyramid? I just stick to protein first and if there is room, something healthy.

They've modified it. I also eat the way you do, protein first.

If my math is right, it's been a long day so I may be wrong, You have been out of surgery about 7 months, so that is 20 lbs a month.  That isn't to shabby.

Re: the pyramid.  It was changed not too long ago.  Maybe you should go back to the nutritionist f or her explaination.  Your doctor must have guidelines that he wants you to follow.

37 lbs were lost pre-op so I've lost 104 lbs since surgery (I am pleased with my loss so far). That averages out to about 14 lbs a month although, that is an average because I don't always lose that much per month and the loss has really slowed down. I started out with a BMI that was 77...so no lightweight here. Heavyweights are supposed to lose fast and I know there are others that are losing faster. I still have about 130 lbs to lose and I am worried I won't reach my goal within the 12-18 mos window. Anyways, that's beside the point, I was just curious if anyone was following the food pyramid.

There is something called the bariatric food pyramid. It should show up if you Google it. Surprise--the base of it is protein. The country switched from a pyramid to the new pyramid to HealthyPlate. Because of the need for protein first, Healthy Plate may be great but it isn't for the post-op WLS patient.

Was this a food pyramid for just bariatric patients or one for the general population? I try to eat protein forward and non starchy veggies. I have always had a problem with carbs so I try to limit the amount I have.

I don't follow the food pyramid, but my nutritionist advises to divide the plate into 4 sections (a SMALL plate). On this plate, 1 quarter is complex carbs, 1 quarter is vegetable, and 1/2 is lean protein.

For example, a meal would be a palm full of whole grains, a fist full vegetable medley, and 3-5 ounces of chicken breast. Added fats need to be of omega-3 quality (like olive oil). Watch out for the sugars in stuff like ketchup, bbq sauces & dressings. I use a LOT of picante sauce and hot sauces. Adds flavor without calories.

I also eat a LOT of pickles.
