I am scheduled for surgery 2/20/12 and I have to begin my protein shakes next week. Can anyone tell me the best tasting shake but one that has a good amount of protein?

I just started a similar thread. You may want to look about 6 threads down or just click on the link that I've been nice enough to provide for you.

No matter what advice you get, you really have to try them yourself.  What I love, you might hate.  It's really personal.

Best thing I did -- order a pile of samples from vitalady.com.  Don't try them until you're post-op, because your tastes will change.  Also, try mixing them with different bases -- milk, water, crystal lite.

thanks so much for that. I can order them now, and at least have them for when I'm home.

Here is what no one tells you.....

No protein shakes "tastes" good.  The question then becomes which shake can I drink and not throw up, or what can I add to my shake to make me able to shallow it.

IMHO anyway, protein shakes have been the worst part of this experience.  Bars I can handle a bit better, but only certain ones.

Pre op I used Ensure HP. It tasted great and provided me with sufficient nutrients. Post op, couldn't tolerate them. I assume it was the sugar in them. Post op, I did and am still using ViShape by Visalus Science
I had no issues tolerating them.

I know most people are cost conscious when it comes to shakes, but I figure since my food budget is decreasing, I can splurge on protein shakes.

One day, I had forgotten any food to take to work and had my follow up with my surgeon.  I got a couple of samples of the Bariatric Fusion shakes (strawberry and chocolate.)  After trying the strawberry with milk, I immediately went online and bought a canister.  I also got a few samples of Mint Chocolate Chip.  I then bought a canister of that.  I have one every day, and with milk, it is 35g protein (plus many vitamins we need.) BTW, I was surprised that I liked either flavor.

I was almost to tears at one point trying to get all of the protein in each day, but now I can relax a little more.  It really is a matter of trying a lot of different ones.  If I get one whiff of protein, it is a struggle to get down, but these seem to work for me.

Good luck on your quest.  I think getting samples is a great way to go to get a feel for what you like.

I like the Total Lean Shakes....I mix the chocolate and vanilla together and it taste like a glass of chocolate milk. They are lactose free. I can't tolerate milk so this works great for me! I can tell you this.....finding a protein shake that was lactose free that didn't almost make me hurl was expensive and the hardest thing about surgery adventure....but I got it! Good luck on yours

I like the proti diet concentrated drinks mixed with propel in 16.9 oz water: 15 g protein.  only 2 carbs. It helps get the fluids down too.   I also liked chicken broth mixed with unflavored unjury right after surgery. I didn't care for the thick shakes.  They were really hard to get down.  Some people handle warm liquids better after surgery too.  You should try to get a little in the morning and a little in the evening of the warm.  Protidiet hot chocolate is also good to try.  I wish you great success with your surgery.
