Surviving diet before surgery!
RNY on 02/02/12
Hi, I just got my date it is February 16th and my Dr. requires that you go on a 500 calorie per day diet 14 days before surgery, That is what scares me the most. Has anyone else had to do this? if so can I get some tips or advice...500 calories OMG

sounds really strick to me...i was allowed 3 protein drinks and 2 ww/lean cuisine meals a day...but, of course the last 2 days of preop was horrid...totally liquid the first day, and then the cleaning out the gut thing the second day...but, believe me, im only 3 days out...no problems so far, and no pain in the hospital or now...its the best thing i coulda done for me!!!!
I agree with a previous poster that you need more specifics from your surgeon. 500 calories sounds very low and also very tough to do. My 2 week preop diet was a high protein, low carb liquid diet to rapidly shrink the liver's size by depleting the glycogen (glucose) stored inside. Some people wind up having their surgery stopped after the surgeon gets in there and discovers that their liver is too large and in the way.
This was my 2 week pre op diet:
1300 calories/day
90-120 Grams of protein/day
Less than 100 Grams of carbs/day
1 chewable multivitamin/day
Whey protein shake for breakfst-lunch-dinner. A snack that was 25 Grams of protein. Clear and full liquids inbetween meals.
If I needed to chew I could have some raw or cooked non starchy veggies like carrots, celery, cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers or cucumbers.
If I was struggling with excessive hunger I could eat 2 TBSP of natural peanut butter or 1/4 cup of nuts/day.
Once a week I could have 3-4 ounces of fish, chicken or turkey.
