anyone suffer from gout post op?
I was just diagnosed with gout and it is terribly painful. I was wondering if this is common post op since it is related to high uric acid levels can be due to dehydration or a problem with your absortion or elimination of uric acid - can also be related to uric acid kidney stones and kidney disfunction, I have had a high uric acid level for several months but thought it was due to dehydration so did nothing about it other than keep drinking which I do anyway due to my chronic kidney stones and bladder infections but last week the pain in both my big toes has gotten unbearable.
My PCP put me on colcrys(colchicine) to try to get it under control and if this doesn't work I will have to also go Alupurinol and at as a last resort, I might need steroids. She said many use NSAIDS but as we know that isnt an option.
I am praying that this works. I also went for a new CT to see if my kidney stones have returned since that pain is pretty bad too - wondering if the stones are now uric acid. Before I had an off the chart Calcium oxylate level, high PH and very low citrate level. Was put on B6 - 100mg daily, calcium citratre with each meal. and I was supposed to also take potassium citrate but due to chronic bladder infections and history of bowel obstruction, I haven't taken it.

My husband was just dx with gout 2 weeks ago. He is a non-op. But I was discussing his new medical condition with the work ladies and one of them has a husband that suffers from gout and he drinks black cherry juice. I haven't had a chance to research it at all yet, but she said it really helps keep her husbands flare ups under control. He is on some other meds and one of them causes gout. Unfortunately he can't go without that med so has to work around it. The prescription for his gout wasn't working well with his other meds too.

cherry juice does work-(or it did for my husband) but you have to get the real stuff- concentrate from the health food store and stir it into water- -- protein is a culprit (his flared up after he did the atkins program) and we all know that protein is what we thrive on- so get teh cherry juice and give it a try-- hope it works for you-- and eat more fish and chicken, red meat is apparenlty the bigger culprit-
from everything I have read, organ meats are the worst and other things with purines but fish and chicken are just as bad as red meat. They are all protein. The articles specifically said that many people to lower there cholesterol go off red meats and eat more chicken and fish thinking it will help the gout and it doesn't. You just have to limit your protein to 6 to 8 ounces per day it said if possible which is really tough for us.
