Hair loss and Biotin

Does Biotin really work in slowing down the hair loss? If so, how soon should I expect to see a difference?

I had my 3 month checkup with my surgeon on Wednesday and the NUT actually told me to add the biotin. I didn't take it immediately because I have heard some conflicting stories about whether or not it actually is effective. Anyway, what are your experiences? I'm seriously hoping it will work because my hair loss is fairly significant and I can still expect a good 4-6 months of it! :S

Biotin does not do anything as far as preventing or slowing hair loss.  All it MAY do -- and there is no hard evidence of this... Some people say it helps and others notice little effect  -- is help promote REGROWTH.

My experience and that of others here indicates that Biotin doesn't do anything
to "stop" hair loss, but I saw tons of tiny, new hair sprouts. I think Biotin helps
quite a bit with hair regrowth, but despite taking it every day from the day I got
home from the hospital, I lost signficant hair and had nearly bald patches.
It's a good idea to take it, but I would not expect it to prevent hair loss.

There is no scientific evidence, as in medical studies, that biotin helps with hair loss at all.  There is anecdotal evidence, as in people say it helps, that it helps with regrowth.  Again, no medical studies either way.

I am 1 1/2 years out.  I have taken biotin from immediately out of surgery to present day.  I take 2 capsules a day of the highest dose I could find at Wal-Mart.  I don't know if it slowed it down, but I do know that the regrowth it promoted is very healthy.  My nails grow faster and stronger because of this supplement.  I lost a lot of hair but now my hair is just as full and even healthier than before.  I encourage you to take it.

I, on the other hand, started taking it 2 months before my surgery and  did not notice any difference between how fast the hair grew back in and how fast it normally grows.  I also did not notice any change in my fingernails, so I kept increasing my dosage. After being on 5000 units per day for a couple of months, however, I did notice that I was starting to grow new facial hair on my cheeks down by the jawline!  I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then resumed it at a lower dose.

I am 4.5 years post-op, and the hair I lost after my RNY is just now down to below my ears.  (I had a second round of hair loss about a year and a half ago, and hat hair is only a couple of inches long, so I still don't have my normal fullness back yet.)

Same here with the biotin and didn't notice any difference either.  My nails are pretty good and stronger, but that could also be all the calcium and other vitamins too.

I did not have any positive effects from taking biotin.  However, I did have a nasty negative effect of an outbreak of HUGE pimples!  I Googled this and discovered that some people get cystic acne as a side effect of taking biotin.  So that was the end of that for me!
