Hypoglycemia Blood Tests

Last week I had a metastatic cancerous tumor removed from my neck.
While in the hospital I had a few strange episodes.
Suddenly I would start shaking almost like a seizure, I would get nauseous and start trying to vomit but nothing would come up, I would have trouble talking and my heart rate would go up to 160.
I know I wasn't eating often enough but didn't have a clue.
When my surgeon came to see me before I was released he told me to get checked for hypoglycemia.
Next week I'm having my regular yearly blood tests.
Do I need to call my Internist to have her add any other tests?
Fasting blood sugar test is already on the list.

The fasting glucose will tell you if your sugar is low before you eat.

Some people have problems with it dropping too low after they eat.  To see if that is happening to you, there is not one blood test that will determine it, you would need to get a monitor and check it regularly for a while to see what happens when.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

You might consider going to an endocrinologist who has experience dealing with RNY patients and RH, if there is one in your area.

But definitely do what Kelly said.

Also, could they have given you something in your IV that caused that.  When I was researching surgeons for my RNY, at one of the clinics I visited there was a patient giving recommendations for that doctor.  She told about a car wreck she was involved in post RNY.  While in the emergency room they gave her something in her IV, they think,  that made her very ill.  The ER actually called in her Bariatric surgeon.  Her point to us was that was how much her surgeon  responded to his patients.  I however never forgot her story that she was medicated w/something that conflicted with her RNY.  I don't remember if it was dumping or RH...but have you considered a medication caused this?  The take away from them was there was something given in the IV probably.

Several doctors at the hospitals were trying to figure out if is was an allergic reaction but nothing was figuered out.
Maybe I can get a list of what was given me & I can take it to my bariatric surgeon.
I have had a couple of episodes since I've been home so I treated them like hypoglycemia with 1/2 regular coke & that has worked.

I have RH when I eat carbs/sugar on an empty stomach.  I drink orange juice.

you need to see an Endocrinoloigst that is familiar with gastric bypass.  There are different types of hypoglycemia - reactive hypoglycemia and my Endo told me some other type - I forgot the name but it is related to how your body processes or doesn't process in your pancreas.  She said it can be quite serious and needs to be monitored and treated carefully.

There are special tests that an Endo can do involving insulin levels and other stuff plus you need to get a glucose meter and check your sugars periodically throughout the day both before and after eating sugar and carbs to see how you react.

When your sugar is low, you need to eat somethign with carbs but you also need to eat something with protein to stop your sugar levels from going up and plummetting again.

try to avoid high carb foods and also eat carbs with protein

 Thank you.
I will talk to my Internist about it.
