Willing to try anything...
I love my hair, always have... Even when I was heavier, I loved my hair b/c it's so long and natural (never colored) and I always got some compliments on my hair but I'm 3 months post-op and I'm losing the very thing that I love so dearly... My hair use to be so full, so thick and shiny and now it's super thin and fragile looking, sometimes even dry... What can I do to help grow back? Does it stop falling out and if so WHEN!?!?!?!? I've heard about a lot of different products, Biotin pills, Nioxin shampoo and hair treatment and Ovation Cell Therapy... Has anyone tried these and if so which ones works for us!!!! HELP ME PLEASE I don't want to lost what hair is left!!!
Nope, it doesn't ever stop falling out. All RNY post ops, no matter how many years out, are bald. You know all of us that look like we have hair in our pics? All wigs. Every one.
Sarcasm over.
Yes, it stops falling out. Usually takes about three months. What works is to make sure you get enough protein and take your vitamins. It'll grow back.

Hi Maria,
My hair started falling out too and although it's depressing at sometimes when you see your hair brush full, it is a normal bodily reaction to being very low calorie and the drastic weight loss. Most of the time though, it seems worse to me than it does to anyone else. I found that parting it differently and styling it differently have helped. Just like eating post-op, you have to get creative with the hair styling post op.
I can't speak for all the aids you mentioned but do take biotin. I was told that it would take about three months of taking biotin before I'd notice a difference. I've been taking it for two or so months and have noticed that the "bald" spots aren't as bald. Biotin however, doesn't stop the hairloss, because it can't correct the low calories or the rapid weight loss that most of the hair loss is attributed to (and frankly I wouldn't want it to) but it does help with regrowth. Now, my spots aren't as noticable, I'm still loosing hair daily (more so than the normal amount) and still get the occasional glob when washing my hair, but it is growing in and I've noticed my hair length is getting longer too, so I know that the biotin is helping with the regrowth. Some people that I've read about on the board, say it didn't work for them and to save your money. I managed to get some at a decent price at GNC and figured it's worth a shot.... It's up to you really!
I hope this helps.

LOL...Kelly...you crack me up! As for the hair loss...save your money. Your hair is falling out in response to the trama of the surgery on your body and the anesthesia they used during your surgery. Nothing you apply to your head will actually stop the loss. I am a cosmetologist. There are a lot of products that will make your hair feel and look thicker but none , that I know of, that will regrow your hair or prevent it from falling out. You just have to let it run it's course. I lost a lot of hair at about 4 months out. I am only 14 months out and my hair has come back just as thick and beautiful as before my surgery. Most of my family and friends never even noticed my hair loss. I think we are our own worst critics. Relax... Some people get a new hair cut to get themselves through the hair loss. The key to making sure it comes back thick and beautiful....TAKE YOUR VITAMINS AND GET AT LEAST 80 g OF PROTEIN IN EVERYDAY!
Okay, take a deep breath and relax! No one will be looking much at your hair because they will be looking at your new sexy bod.
Seriously, the hair thing will pass. It's all part of the process for most of us. It is a short term thing, and it will grow back. From what I've read, most of the things like Biotin, and etc are a waste of time and money. For now work on an alternate hair style and focus on things that really are more important, like changes to become successful at this new lifestyle, and before you know it, your hair will be back to normal again.
