Am I NOT big enough? Will I loose too much?

I am 27 yrs old, weigh about 221 and I am ONLY 4' 10". I have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. I take meds for the diabetes and high blood pressure. I am ONLY 27! However, ppl have told me, "you don't look that big." You should just try to get the weight off yourself b/c you aren't "that big."

Many ppl don't know my health issues! My BMI is freaking 46! Ppl don't understand. I know I need to drop AT LEAST 100 lbs. But after hearing these opinions, now I keep asking myself, what if I do loose too much. Everybody keeps saying I will look like a "crackhead." I'm scared I could get too small. Is that possible when you start off at my weight?

I thought of the same thing...  i'm just a bundle of 5'3" at 220 and i may not look like it...  but the scale says so and so do my knees...  my back...  and a list of other issues...  I'm not sure how much weight i'll loose...  and i don't know what i'll look like..  all i can say and i'm looking forward to loosing as much as i can to take this weight off my spine...  I'm going for it..  it can only get better.. and if i continue to loose weight and get smaller than i want, my plan is to be fit and strong...  so i may end up small...  but i plan on being strong...  my RNY is schduled on 2/28....I can't wait...

good, thx for that! I don't have a date yet. I just got all my paperwork turned in. The surgeon's office said they will probably call the end of next week to talk about dates!

If your BMI is 46,  you ARE big enough.  With the co-morbidities you have you only needed a BMI of 35 (maybe 30) to qualify.  If you need to lose 100 lbs. I doubt you have to worry about losing too much.

People tell me that I should not lose any more weight.  I still weigh over 250. I may be smaller than I used to be but I am not skinny.  I am still obese.

I was a relative lightweight with a BMI of 40 - I initially lost 120lbs, but bounced back to a net 100lb loss - I am 6ft but did look skinny after losing 120lbs - we do tend to fluff out a bit after a while though - it's important at the lowest weight not to panic and think you MUST gain weight - believe me, there is a very good chance that your body won't stay at it's lowest level if it gives you a low BMI!!    Over the years, I have seen lots of people post about how they hate being skinny and are eating to combat it, only to post a year later that they are fighting a biggish regain!!!

I think a BMI of 46 is what makes you a candidate, because you have more than 100lbs to lose - doesn't matter about height!

BMI is more accurate for average-height people, and less accurate for the very tall and very short. More info at Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_mass_index#Limitations_and_shortc omings

But even so, I don't doubt your situation for a moment, especially with those comorbidities. I wish you the best of luck in finding the right solutions ---  and for dealing with idiots who just dont get it.

I'm 244lbs and 5' tall. Having been rather athletic a few years ago, I like to think I have a more muscular foundation under all this fat and so it helps me look more compact, but...I don't know how much of that is actually true.

The thing is--it's not really about how big you are or even how many comorbidities you have. I don't have any. Except for knee pain, back pain, hip pain, fatigue, and the inability to climb stairs without wheezing. Not medical, but it's enough that it severely affects my quality of life.

What it IS about is the fact that I CAN'T take this off by myself. Yeah, so I don't have 200 pounds to lose like some do, but that doesn't mean the 115lbs I DO have to lose are any more within my abilities.
I can do a lot. I can raise two kids, I can run a business, I can train an untrainable dog, and I can manage a household all by myself. But I have realized I can't shift this weight without help. So I'm getting help. And so are you.

It's not your size that matters so much. It's about whether you feel you can do it on your own.
