Looking for a little assistance with recovery process from RNY. As a single female how difficult will it be to come home without anyone being here to help out.  There are friends who could stop by on occassion but for the most part she would be alone.  Is it necessary to have someone stay with her for the first days out of the hospital? I realize everyone is different but as a general rule of thumb how difficult is the process.
Thanks much,

She will need a ride to the hospital and a ride home.  Hospitals are hesitant to do medical procedures on patients that don't have help at home.  So if the social workers visit her in the hospital she probably needs to let them know of her needs. Or just stretch the truth that she has help.  I for the most part took care of myself. The trick is to have everything done before surgery.  I took off the day before to do everything I needed to do.  A week before I cleaned my house from top to bottom so it would stay pretty clean til I felt well enough to clean again.

Also I all my laundry including my bedding the day before. I wanted to go home to fresh sheets!  She needs to pick up any prescriptions she may need unless she has someone to get them for her. I wasn't allowed to drive for 5 days. I also bought all my vitamins and tried them out as well as my protein shakes.  I bought diet jello, Crystal light and broth.  Once home I had a stack of netflixs and magazines to read.  If she needs any advice about doing this alone she can ask me!  I wish her the best of luck!

It all depends on how determined a person this individual is. I've heard many people say "I could not do it, without my family's help".  It also depends on whether there's significant complications, post-op.

I myself live alone and I am always alone. I came home alone in the back seat of a a taxi cab with no freggin shocks, holding my guts in with the teddy bear pillow that they gave me in the hospital. I came home slowly walked upstairs, slowly got in the tub and took a shower to wash the hospital germs off. I got dressed went downstairs, and laid down on the couch for a few hours.
Then I realized that I didn't want to leave my dog in the kennel another night, so I got into my car and I got my dog. I called the reception at the kennel beforehand, and told her to meet me at my car with my dog (I settled my bill prior to going into the hospital). I then drove home. I was not in any sort of medication fog at any time, so it was safe for me to do this.

Then when someone *****sides close to me got home from work, I asked them to go to CVS and pick up my pain meds. Although I could do alot, I didn't think that standing in a long pharmacy line post op would work out for me.

I too did EVERYTHING before going into the hospital. I cleaned very very well to avoid any infection just in case I came home with an open wound.  I had a vomit waste basket near by just in case. I stayed in my house alone from Thursday (relase day****il Saturday morning when my friend came to help me from out of state. Even when she came she had nothing to do but give me moral support because I could do everything myself and I had prepared well.

I live in a 2 story apt, I stayed on the couch for nearly 5 weeks, just came upstairs for showers only.

The individual that you speak of should be fine getting along alone after surgery, barring no complications.

Preparing the home is going to be key: Chair in the shower or tub; a picker-upper tool for getting things from the floor; clear soups/broths; sugar free jello; sugar free popsicles; cottage cheese; tea and crystal light; cream soups for 2nd week. Should avoid lifting more than 10 lbs. Will want to avoid bending over her stomach. Space nearby for the deep breathing apparatus which she might have to use those first few days if she sleeps alot. (Many of us slept a lot the first few days.) Equipment and journal for tracking blood pressure and blood sugar if HBP and diabetes are conditions she has before surgery. And of course, clean clothes and clean bed for her comfort.

Good luck,

Hattie

I just had my RNY done on Monday. I came home Tuesday, I could do most of the the necessities myself, yet I could not,
1.get out of bed
2. get my pants on

Other than that I was fine alone. I was only in the hospital for one night, my second day home was better, your freind should opt to stay in the hospital for a second night. By day three I was able to go out shopping.
