Help!!

I have just finished all my paperwork and it is now submitted to the insurance company and waiting on approval. My doctor and nutrionist gave me several ideas and product brands for the protein but I haven't found not one I like. I can have anything with Aspartame. I think I can have Splenda but that is limiting me with a lot of stuff. The smell of some of the protein powder and drinks are awful. I even tried the protein shots. I am guessing that might be the way to go for me but any suggestions.

Thanks

Well the one suggestion I do have is the protein shots are not the way to go.  They are made mostly of "Proprietary Blend Of Collagen".  Even if they say whey protein if you look at the ingredients odds are the first one will be that collegen one.  We don't absorb that well.

As for the shakes.  Try and try again.  And then recoginize that your tastes will most likely change after surgery so you will have to try even more. vitalady.com is a good source for sample sizes.  And manufacturers often sell them on their website or if you contact them you can even (sometimes) get a free sample.

I'm not really sure what kind of protein you're looking for. I used the Nectar brand protein powder in the beginning. It comes in a variety of flavors, and you can get samples before buying the big jugs so you know what flavor you like the best. But honestly, I really tried to get my protein from food as soon as I could. I did do the Atkins bars because they could be chewed up to basically "nothing" so they were easy on my stomach, and I used egg beaters eventually, and broth mixed with little jars of baby food 100% meat, so it was like a liquid, meaty soup. If that makes sense to you. :D  Carnation instant breakfast packets mixed with milk (sugar free) were a good source also.

Stay away from the protein shots.  They contain collagen which we don't absorb.  They are a waste of money.

What brands have you tried?  How have you tried preparing them?

Jay Robb is sweetened with stevia. It's really good, in my opinion. There are others sweetened with stevia as well if you do a search. A lot of sites have samples so you can try them before buying a tub. The vitamin shoppe and gnc let you return items if you don't like them.

Try the unflavored protien powders and mix with what you like, sf syrups, sf jello, sf pudding, cinnamon, cocoa powder etc.    Made all the difference to me and now at 21 months I still have a protien shake every day and love them.

I love the nectar protein, made by Snytrax.         Lots of flavors , I still use cappucinno and vanilla, I use the cappucino in the morning as a coffee, and the vanilla if I feel the need of another protein drink, I add different flavors of  crystal ligh

You know, pre-op I liked a couple that I hated after, and hated a couple that I wound up liking after.

The best advice I got about protein was to order 2 single-serve sizes of any flavor that I thought I might remotely enjoy, and then don't touch them until after surgery.

After surgery, go though the stack using only one of each flavor. Put the empty packet in a pile marked "yes" or "no" (no maybe's allowed here). After you've finished both sets of single serves, check your piles. Anything that had 2 yes packets, go ahead and order. Anything that had 2 no packets, get rid of them.

Also understand that your tastes WILL change. Seriously. Early out, almost every chocolate was too intense for me. At this point, I'm making chocolate shakes with additional unsweetened cocoa and only 4 oz of milk to intensify the taste. Conversely, I've had to switch my vanilla to a birthday cake flavor to get more sweetness into it.

Finally, check out Bariatric Foodie - Nik's blog site. She has an incredible list of ways to change up shakes. At this point, the only time I drink an undoctored shake is if I'm trapped at work and need one. Otherwise, they all have sugar free syrups and/or crystal light and/or sugar free pudding mix in them. I hate to admit it, but I have 18 different flavors of SF syrups from Torani and DaVinci, and use them all the time. It makes a huge difference.

Thanks again for the advice. I had ordered the unflavored UNJURY protein powder and it came in today but went to work out and only had a chance to open it and it smells horrible. I did buy some SF chocolate syrup that I will try with it maybe tomorrow after work. I know the premaid protein shakes are a little nasty tasting to me so far. I have really strong taste buds. I did have one called ISOPURE blueberry that wasn't too bad but seems like it would take all day to finish that one after my surgery.

Now just waiting on the approval for my insurance to see if it is approved.
