It's the other way around - calcium blocks iron.

as far as I know it is 300mg of calcium but to make sure, I don't take them together at all.  I doubt 50 mg would do much.  How much iron are you taking and what type?  Are you taking it within 2-4 hours of thyroid medicatioN?  You want to take carbonyl iron with vitamin C - 200mg of vitamin C per 30mg of iron.  WIth a ferritin level as low as yours, you need high dose carbonyl irons - the difference between 16 and 21 isn't really much, there can always be a slight difference from day to day.  I would recommend if you aren't already, get some tender irons from vitalady.com and take 3-4 per day to get your level up. IF this doesn't work, get some heme -break them in half and take them at a different par to the day as the carbonyl iron

unfortunately, ferrous fumerate is pretty useless for us  = we can't absorb ferrous irons - ferrous irons need a highly acid environment and vitamin C isn't enough to do that.  After WLS surgery, we no longer produce the acid needed and then if you take a PPI or other acid suppressing medication makes it impossible to absorb it.  We need to take either carbonyl with vitamin C or heme and 29mg is doubtfully enough to have levels high enough for any of us.  Minimum starting dose is usually 60mg = my NUT starts all patients with 150mg

Ok.. vent here.. not aimed at you.. but why the HELL would BA sell this type of iron if bypass patients can't absorb it??

Celebrate's Iron is the same stuff.

Are you sure we can't absorb it?

I went to both bariatric advantage and celebrate websites - bariatric advantage irons are all carbonyl irons only excess the passion fruit which must be the one you are taking which is a combination of ferrous fumerate and carbonyl iron.  The ones with just carbonyl iron aren't great either because they dont' have nearly enough vitamin C in them, so you would have to take extra vitamin C with them.  the ones from celebrate are pure carbonyl iron and again, don't have enough vitamin C - you need 200mg of vitamin C for every 30mg of iron.  As far as I know, the only place to get the proper combination is at vitalady.com and they are called tender irons - they are 60mg of carbonyl iron with 400mg of vitamin C per capsule - they are very easy on your stomach, non-constipating and easily absorbed.  Most people start taking anywhere from 1-2 at a time and then adjust there dose from there but can take up to 5 if needed.

You can't take them within 2-4 hours of calcium or thyroid medication.
