My pre-op appointment for RNY is on 2/14. I have been making a list of things I want to make sure I ask my surgeon, but I figure it cant hurt to ask all of you if you have any things you wish you would have asked or are planning to ask.
Thanks!

Ask for scripts for pain meds and something for nausea so you can fill them before surgery and have them waiting for you at home.  You don't wanna have to stop at the pharmacy on the way home from the hospital.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

Here are the questions that I would ask:
1. how long will I stay in the hospital
2. how long will I be away from my loved ones during surgery (for me 8hrs)
3. Where will I be in the hospital
4. Where will I wake up (maybe in ICU)
5. what should my regiminante be after
6. when will I be asked to walk (for me the night of surgery)
7. will I have a pain pump
8. will I be on a liquid diet before surgery (for me a 2 day liquid)
9. Can I take pills instead of liquid bowel prep (I wished I asked for this one)
10. If I need a seditive may I have one?
11. How long does the surgery usually take?
12. Will I be on blood thinners?

Side note:

I would bring the following:
Hand cream
chapstick (oxygen is drying)
loose fitting clothing - I refused to walk in a joynee didnt want my butt hanging out
deoderant
toothbrush
slippers - its a hospital people spill things, is it coffie or pea who knows
a small pillow - you want this for the ride home and for coughing-holding it to your stomach helps alot, place it between your body and the seatbelt, you can hold pressure if going over bumps and other things.

Thats all of the wisdom I have for you, you will do fine.  I am a week out and am feeling great. I built up the pain more and more daily, and it did not add up for me in the end.  I guess if surgery is less painful than you thought it is better than if it is more.
