I am 9 months post op.... Well - almost 10 months next week.

Anyway, is it possible to put yourself in Ketosis - like I was after surgery??  Like a shock to my system?  To have a big loss again?

I am sure this isn't possible - but thought I would ask.

Thanks -
~Jamie~

Sure Thing!!  Cut the carbs out of your diet...concentrate on protien...and ina 2 or 3 days voila!  Ketosis...you can get Ketostix at the pharmacy and check for yourself how far into ketosis you are...the darker purple, the better..but after a week or so..slowly start adding veggies back into your diet....

Awesome - Thank you Chilipepper -

So does that mean I eat ZERO carbs for a couple days?
I drink 80 grams of protein on average a day.  and the food I eat is kinda crappy.  Carb related of course.

Thanks for the reply!

Might I suggest that at 9 months out you should be EATING most of your protein requirements and not drinking them?   This would really help you to eliminate eating the "crappy carbs" you say you are eating?

This journey is a journey for life - not just a sprint for a final goal weight.   Unless you forge good habits for a lifestyle you will find your maintenance phase, which really is for life, very difficult.

Believe me, long term successes are people that understand the importance of what they are eating and not people that look for short term successes with the scale!

Unfortunately my surgeon disagrees with this and believes I should DRINK my protein forever. My food intake should be 3 small "snacks" for the day.

I do not eat much - I do eat quite a bit of fruit and veggies. But I do like to have carby things occassionally.

I think my weight loss is going fine... I lose on average 4-9 pounds a month. Just was wondering how to get a BIG loss for a month.

Thanks for everyone input.

LIke Kim said..you should be eating your protein now...a shake a day just to boost your totals..but the more protein you eat, the less hungry you will be therefore the less chance you will eat the carbs.  Less carbs, less craving for carbs...

About the ketosis...I have alway had good luck with it as a last resort jump start.  Make sure your moving and drinking fluids.  Get the sticks...it usually takes me 2 or 3 days of pure protein..chicken, fish shrimp cheese...then once  I am good in in ketosis...then I slowly start adding some healthy carbs..some veggies...small salad.

I don't like the 5 day pouch test but I do recommend heading back into ketosis.

How long has it been since you have lost any weight? Are you working out, there are many ways to shock your body changing up your work outs, adding more protein to your intake and plenty of water.

I'm exactly as far along as you are and, as far as I know, have stayed in ketosis for the past year (including 6 months preop) by keeping carbs between 30-50g per day (per my NUT). This is only from dairy & veggies, occasionally some strawberries on a limited basis. Now, this is not exactly something one can maintain forever, but I'm gonna eek out every pound during my honeymoon period that I can!
Get back to basics - lean proteins, dairy, and WHEN you have the carb budget for them, veggies - and test yourself with ketostix as the other poster suggested. It IS possible! May not have the big losses that we expected much earlier on, due to metabolism and just being a lower weight, but you can at least get more wiggle room on before your guts get smart and start absorbing the calories efficiently again.....

Ketosis can be kickstarted by keeping your carbs below 50g a day. I also agree with the others that food protein is best. At six months out, I get most of mine from food - I only occasionally drink a shake now, usually in the evening when I have not hit my protein for the day.
