Mondays Nutrition Numbers...what am I doing wrong?

When I went in for my 1 month post op visit on 1/30 my surgeon didn't seem to happy with my 22 pound loss. She quizzed me on if I was drinking soda(REALLY???) and made a HUGE point to me saying I should only be eating 3 times a day..absolutely no more! She said to get my protein and fluids in and really made me feel bad about eating anything at all. This info also contridicts the "handbook" she gave me..which outlines a meal plan of 3 meals and 2-3 snacks plus 2 glasses of milk a day on top of the fluids.

So here I am today..I'll be 7 weeks out on Friday. I have struggled to get more than 500 calories in a day I'm coming CLOSE to my protein goal and coming within a few ounces of my fluid goal on days that I don't exceed it.

Yesterday I felt like I had a great day..613 calories 60g of protein and I got all my fluids in. My first question is...I go to the gym 10 hours a week(2 hr Mon, Tues, Weds, Fri, 1 hour on Thurs, Sat, none on Sunday) yesterday I burned 620 calories at the gym..most days I burn more calories at the gym than I am taking in...is this okay? Can this be slowing down my weight loss?

My second question is..I've only lost 8lbs since 1/30..which I know was only 2 weeks ago..but the scale hasn't moved in a week(and last month I experienced almost 2 weeks with no movement). I know that stalls are normal..but are they supposed to be this frequent..or am I doing something wrong?

Thank you for all the support and advice!

I think some of  us might want to know if you are losing inches...  That's a LOT of exercise.

22 pouns the first month is awesome. What the hell is wrong with him? Sounds like you are doing fantastic! If anything you could use more calories with all the exercise you are getting and maybe more protein. JMO.

You are doing GREAT!!

What I find is that many surgeons (unless they themselves have undergone bariatric surgery) don't know how hard their plans are to follow!

You probably aren't taking in enough calories. This is probably because you can't eat enough at each of your three meals to really sustain your body, so it has probably slowed down your metabolism a bit. You're at the point where it's probably not that hard to adhere to three meals a day and if you do three low-cal meals a day, that can be counterproductive to your weight loss.

While I don't want to out-and-out advise you to go rogue, you might try experimenting a little bit. Try breaking your meals up into 4 or 5 "meals" a day. Protein shakes count as a meal. Strive to make each of your meals about 200 calories (don't freak out about that, if you're working out, and since you are still in the beginning of your process, your body is likely burning WAY more than that).

There are plenty of ways to get 200 calories (healthfully) without eating a lot. Put a serving of nuts or nut butter in your day (nut/nut butter serving = 1 oz.). Try bumping up to 2%  milk if you are drinking skim. Things like that.

Do this for a week or two (preferrably two) and keep your exercise routine the same and see if you notice a difference in your losses.

Stalls do happen, but undereating (intentionally or not) can make them last way longer than they should.

Good luck on whatever you decide!

P.S. I feel obligated to say I am  NOT a nutritionist so take any advice I or others give you with a grain of salt and only do what YOU feel comfortable doing!

Good grief! Not a big motivator to stay healthy when your surgeon isn't being very supportive. I hope you're getting support from other places..... I'd echo what Nik said - figuring out what plan is going to suit YOU and give you the results you know you can achieve, may be the best course of action. My surgeon switched practices in the middle of my journey, so I got info from 2 different NUTs. Plan A worked better from me than Plan B, and even if that caused some static from her new practice, I knew I had to do what worked for me. And it worked. Just saw my surgeon today and she said I'm looking so great that she wanted to steal my wardrobe!

What you deem as slow weight loss isn't bad at all.  I do believe your small intake and high amount of exercise can be causing you to stall frequently.  Your body is in starvation mode and is holding on to every calorie it can (and body fat) to not starve to death.

The weeks of no loss isn't uncommon though saying this.  Many post-ops find this happening then see a large loss maybe one week a month.  Try (yes it's hard) to not over-analyze the pounds you are losing, you might try journaling to see if you can see a trend as to how your body works.

As for your doctor, BS on the comments she made to you.  My surgeon also believed in 3 meals a day, no snacks and no protein shakes at all.  I followed his plan as close to possible but I did shakes because I needed the nutrition.

My opinion is eat regularly (3 meals, 2 snacks) making sure you are focused on protein and drinking your liquids.

You can do this, believe in yourself and don't let your surgeon break you down mentally.  They really do not understand the post-op life (most) although we chose them to cut us because they do have that skill.

I agree with Nikki's unprofessional opinion and second it.

My NUT said the same thing to me and I thought her tiny little self was HIGH. I eat 5-6 times a day, every 2.5 - 3 hours. Keeps me from being moody, my body seems happy, and I have been working out just under 8 hours a week. I stall quite a bit, I'm still figuring out the caloric intake thingy, but I lose inches and I have a rediculous amount of energy.

I have no idea why I blabbed all that...I'm avoiding the work on my desk.

Thank you all very much for your words of advice and encouragment..I'm going to try to push my calories up to 600-650 everyday and aim for 70 protein and see how that goes for the next week or so!
