Keeping the weight off!!

Nine months post-op and at GOAL!!!  I'm so excited to be here.  Unfortunately, at my 9 month appt. my Dr. basically said - you did really great, but it will be impossible for you to maintain this weight.  Every patient gains weight back once the body starts to learn how to absorb again.  I realize that keeping the weight off will take discipline, exercise and not going back to bad habits.  He just made it sound so matter of fact that the weight will come back.  What do you guys say?

 Wow..what a buzz kill.
Congrats at being at goal. I think one appointment where he acknowledged your great success would have been nice.
There is no reason why you can't continue to be successful.

Not necessarily so. Yes some experience rebound but IMO if the weight is reasonable for your height and body structure regain is not a guarantee.

Congrats on reaching goal. There is a possibly you'll lose additional weight since you are still so new as a post-op.

(Nothing is precise, but this gives you a direction)

To Determine Your Calorie Expenditure Use The Following Formula For Women:

655 + (4.3 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) – (4.7 x age in years) = BMR (Women).

Then you have to determine your Activity Level:

  1. If you are Sedentary: BMR x 20 % (.2)
  2. If you are Lightly Active: BMR x 30 % (.3)
  3. If you are moderately active (You exercise 3 to 4 times per week): BMR x 40 % (.4)
  4. If you are very active (You exercise intensely 5 or more days per week): BMR x 50 % (.5)
  5. If you are extra active (You do hard labor or are in athletic training, or exercise intensely 5 or more days per week for 3 or more hours per day): BMR x 60 % (.6)

Add your Activity Level number to your BMR = Daily Calorie Expenditure

My Example:

As of 11/12/2011: I weigh 131.0 pounds, I am 64.5 inches tall, I am 57 years old, I am Lightly Active-this is how many calories I would use:

655 + (4.3 x 131.0) + (4.7 x 64.5) – (4.7 x 57)   OR
655 + 563.3 + 303.15 – 267.9 = 1253.55. This would be my BMR

Since I am Lightly Active:

1253.55 x .3 = 376.065 (Lightly Active Activity Level)

1253.55+ 376.065= 1629.615 calories used in a day (1629)

I can only speak for myself...... I reached my "happy low" of 115 at 8 months post-op. My goal was 130, but I kept losing and found that 115 was good and my Dr agreed that it was a healthy weight for me.

I have to work to keep up to that weight! Gain DOESN'T happen to everyone. It is definitely NOT impossible to maintain that weight. It's all calories in, calories out
