Hernia Surgery Update

I came home this afternoon and in hindsight it probably wasn't my best idea.  I had such an easy time of it last time I had this hernia repaired that I thought it would be a cakewalk.  Not.  I woke up in tremendous pain.  Like I wanted to die pain.  Last time I had an epidural.  I didn't think it had helped much because it had fallen out so I didn't think I needed one this time.  I am still glad I didn't get one but it did make a big difference, apparently.
It took several shots of Diludid to even touch the pain.  But I really wanted to go home and I figured I could be in pain at home as much as I was in pain in the hospital.
I still am not able to urinate because hurts so badly.  If that doesn't change soon I may be calling my doctor for advice.  My stomach is all misshapen, too.  I don't remember that from the last time but the incision is much bigger then it was last time.
I talked to my son on the phone for a while and I feel a lot better.  I guess it took my mind off of it for a while.  I know that the first day after surgery is the worse so hopefully things will be much better tomorrow.

Sorry your going through a rough time post-op. I am three weeks post-op bi-lateral inguinal hernia repairs so I freshly feel your pain.
My panni area was very misshapped and hard swollen for the first few days. I opted to do cold compresses for the first few days and then heat pads as needed there after and it seemed to help a lot in the swelling and comfort department.
I hear you on the pain it causes to urinate. Make sure you are in a stable place when you first urintate. I opted to pee in the shower because it hurt to sit and I woke up on the bottom of the shower due to the pain of urination on my muscles and I think a vagal effect from it. When my bladder would even get slightly big I would pee so it would relieve that pressure on my abdominals. I also got a script for Robaxin (muscle relaxant) that really helped and also for the back pain for feel from over guarding your stomach (at least I did.)
I was surprised and wished I would have stayed overnight but mine was outpatient. It is really surprising how much these hernia surgeries can take out of you.
Good luck to you and it will get better in a few days.
