Lent as an RNYer

I have a question for those that observe Lent: are you planning to follow meat-less days? Are you giving up any food for Lent?

Ash Wednesday is on the 22nd and looking up masses in our area brought up the reminder that we're supposed to fast & be meatless. I'm thinking that protein shakes may get me thru the day, as well as eggs & cheese. Really hate beans and fish! Last year, I was doing the preop diet so didn't have the medical dispensation exception and it wasn't too hard to go meatless. I'm just a little worried about being too hungry on the days I'd chop out a sizeable portion of my diet! Was thinking about giving up Oh Yeah bars for Lent but decided a bigger sacrifice would be to give up clothes shopping.... Wish me luck on that one!!

Fast is relative, if your medical condition precludes safely fasting (such as a diabetic) you are exempted from fasting.  If you start showing signs of hypoglycemic since you are fasting you are permitted to snack rather than pass out.
You only need to fast one full meal and can have 2-3 small meals according to what my Church posted in the weekly bulletin.  Protein shakes can be filling, eggs, cheese, tofu (if that's tolerable to you) ,
Smile it makes others wonder what you have been up to.

I agree with mom2wow; all Western religions permit persons with medical conditions to skip fasts and food exclusions. However, it is such a personal choice everyone has to make for themselves. One day of eggs, cheese and protein shakes sounds like it would work for me. As far as giving something up for Lent - here's my take - and an RNYer, we have already given up a lot of things. Is there really much left foodwise we can "give up" relatively speaking? I think we live a daily struggle of resisting temptation being food addicts, and the fast and giving up of things during Lent is symbolically how one recreates Jesus's resistance to the temptation posed by Satan. Since we now do this daily, one might say you are exempt during Lent? Just my take :)

Great question--I actually logged back into OH after not having been on these forums for a while to discuss this very issue.

There seem to be two questions, whether to fast and whether to abstain from meat.

I did both on Ash Wed. And today being a Fri, I haven't eaten any kind of meat.

The challenge is that meat is the most filling/satiety-inducing thing that I can eat. Fish doesn't work quite so well for me. Which means I've just felt more hungry today than usual, and may not get all the protein in that I normally would as I didn't have a protein drink today (though I am thinking about having one).

Yep, I've been able to do meatless Weds & today, amazingly. And during busy workdays, fasting is de riguour for me!  But relied heavily on protein shakes, cheese, greek yogurt & veggies. I actually had some steamed shrimp today - don't know why chinese wasn't a consideration in my brain - guess I'm so trained from associating Lent with things like pasta & pizza! Guess creating a new association is in store..... maybe I'll concoct a Lentan protein shake!

I'm a recent convert so I'm just getting used to Lent. Funny, I don't have the pizza/pasta associations--I grew up in New York/Connecticut so I always associated Lent with fish.

Right now I'm eating a high protein waffle made out of almond flour. But I crave something more chewy/satisfying, like...well, MEAT! Argh!

I do Meatless Fridays in Lent. I'm not Catholic but my grandfather was so I do it to honor him.

I have since surgery. If you need Meatless Fridays ideas, visit Bariatric Foodie and search the term "Meatless Fridays."

The quinoa & shrimp salad sounds like a good idea. Shrimp might be my go-to this Lent!

BTW, I think it's awesome that you honor your grandfather that way.... he's smiling down on you for sure!

i went to catholic school first grade through high school, and have never really done the meatless fridays or fasting (at least since i was old enough to make my own meals). plus, i usually honestly forget. i know now that i would not get my protein in if i didn't eat meat, unless i drank milk all day long, which i'd prefer not to do. is it bad that i don't remember what i did last year? since i was living with my parents i probably didn't eat that much meat since they follow it so dinner wouldn't have had meat.
