In my experience, an Upper GI series is where they make you swallow that nasty stuff and take x-rays while it goes through your system. Upper endoscopy is where they sedate you and stick the tube (scope) down your throat. That is referred to as an EGD.
did he say Upper GI - that is an x-ray that you swallow barrium to check out your digestive tract and an upper endoscopy - you go to sleep and they scope your upper digestive tract. I had to have to have both. I think you should have both = the Upper GI shows how you swallow and shows both upper and lower and the endoscopy checks for ulcers, can check for esophagus problems and also can show the surgeon what your stomach looks like. You also want to know if you have swallowing problems again of time and you need to know if you have an ulcer ahead of time and they check for the bacteria HPylori which you can have even if you dont have an ulcer yet, they can cause ulcers down the road, so if you have the bacteria, you can treat it and prevent an ulcer from forming post op.
So, if possible ask for both - the more info your surgeon has - the better
