1 week post op and can eat and drink everything
RNY on 02/17/12
If there is something wrong, how would you know that it's not caused by your eating choices? If a staple came loose, it could have come loose when you were eating two cups of food.
Smoking, drinking, and eating two cups of food less than a week after surgery is dangerous. That you are in the medical profession proves that we all need more education about bariatric surgery. That you think it's enough to have a friend who is a nut (although not a bariatric nut) and some connections in the medical community is pretty scary.
Beside going to seminars and doctors appointments, talking with friends who had had RNY, and joining this site, I read several books on the procedure. Not a single resource that I read suggested that it was okay to smoke, drink and eat two cups of food at a time. I'm not bigoted. When it comes to weight loss surgery, there are certain very basic rules that you MUST follow in order to protect your health.
You came here asking for advice. I'm so sorry it didn't meet with your expectations. I was somewhat concerned for you, but now, I'm leaning towards thinking you are one of those people who post to get reactions. There can't possibly be a well-educated member of the medical community out there who chooses a bariatric surgeon with no pre-op or post-op diet recommendations, chooses to operate on someone who is still smoking and doesn't advise them not to drink a week out from surgery. If you are for real, this ain't gonna work for you, so you might as well talk to that really excellent surgeon and get it reversed before you kill yourself.

Have not read other replies, so sorry if I am repeating...
Lots of people don't have any trouble drinking normally after surgery, so that is not a problem. Now... Tough love time...
First, at so early out, the surgery has not failed, but YOU have apparently failed to follow most of the post-op eating rules. I came home from the hospital eating soft foods (per my surgeon's plan) so eating food so early is not a big deal IF that is what your surgeon's plan calls for. Even under my surgeon's ver liberal eating LAN, however, eating whatever I wanted was NOT an option (and should not be for anyone who is only a week out)! Did your surgeon not give you a food plan to follow right after surgery or are you just choosing not to follow it?
Second, why are you even attempting to eat 2 cups of food at one time?!? I am 4.5 years out and cannot eat that much, even of slider foods like yogurt!
Finally, if you are getting enough protein from food, protein shakes are not necessary, but vitamins and water are. , protein deficiency, and vitamin deficiencies do not show up in just two days, but if you continue doing what you are doing, they will all certainly be coming down the road.
Honestly, I have to wonder if this post is a hoax. If you are serious, though, you are headed for probable failure. This surgery is not magic. You need to do YOUR part.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
Alieden, as you can see by all the fast responses, we are really concerned for you. You did the right thing by posting here for help. I'm sorry if some of the responses seem harsh, but we are just really worried that you had no post-op instructions. It's great to hear you have no trouble with liquids. something that I struggled with for months post-op. That's great. Make sure you get 64 oz. of water at least. You don't want to get dehydrated. As for the vitamins, I find that if I lay my vitamins out the night before, it's easier to remember to take them the next day. It's really important that you take those vitamins. It's easy to forget, so now is a great time to make it a habit of it. You won't feel the effects of not taking them for a while so please don't forget.
Try not be depressed. It's hard to stay off the scale. You will find that you will go days (some times weeks and months further out) without any weight loss. This is a journey. Everyone's different as far as how fast it comes off.
I am amazed you were able to go out to eat so early out. I was in a lot of pain the first couple of weeks. I would stay away from the soda and alcohol for a long time. You need to heal. You need that protein everyone has talked about and measure your food. I'm sure when you see your surgeon, he/she can explain it to you. How they allowed you home with no post-op eating instructions floors me.
Good luck!

Not to mention that, even if somehow she never got any of that extremely detailed info that her surgeon has on his website about post-op eating (including amounts), she should have known SOME of the info from having had the band.

At this point I am really wondering why any surgeon would do an RNY on her.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
