Huge difference between "Why do you want to eat that?" and "WHY would you want to EAT THAT?!?"
One is to gain information. The other is to ridicule or shame the person asking the question.
FWIW, now that I've read the thread in question I absolutely agree that the OP of the thread needed seriously tough talk. Her case is very different from "Can I have cheesecake?"
Someone who wants to know if it's OK to eat cheesecake doesn't need to be yelled at simply for asking. S/he simply needs someone to tell her it's not OK to eat cheesecake.
And someone who says, "I ate cheesecake, is that OK?" needs to be told that it's not OK, and again not ridiculed for asking.
