Embarrassed to ask this?........
I don't have a date yet for my surgery, I have completed everything except seeing the surgeon which is 3/21 and preop classes 4/3 & 4/10. I have this bucket list of all my favorite foods I want to consume before my surgery. Is this normal? Does everyone go through this?
I read about people starting to eat healthy before surgery to lose weight before hand. I realize that with the 10day preop diet I will be eating more healthy but am I abnormal? Should I give up my bucket list and focus more on healthy eating? My bucket list contains pasta, bread, crab, steak, burgers.
Thanks for your insight!

A lot of people go through that. Usually because they think it will be the last time they can ever eat those foods. Then they have surgery and discover that they can still eat almost all their old favorites, just in smaller amounts.
If you want to eat some of your favorites, then eat them. Don't go crazy with them, though. Eat a reasonable portion. Keep in mind that you'll have a limited diet for a little while after surgery but that won't last forever.

My NUT calls it last supper syndrome and yes I have it. I went out and ate steak last night because my Dr. does not want his patients to eat for 6 months after the surgery. Also he wants no rice, pasta or bread for 6 months so I have been having some. I have not been overdoing it but I must say that you are not abnormal. My Nut says alot of patients go thru this.
I say enjoy what you love most.... don't go crazy though.. I am almost 5 yrs out... I cannot eat many breads no pasts or rice at all... I can eat steak, lean burgers, a bit of fish but I can eat potatoes, salades and all the good yummy healthy foods.. no whole grains though a bit of white bread... some crakcers and stuff but I am not straving and love steak and seafood so its all good... good luck huney its the best thing I ever did...
Other than the pasta and bread, the items you have on your "bucket list" are fine for you to eat after surgery (once you get to solid foods, of course)... So I guess I am not sure why they are ON your list. Actually, crab (as long as you don't dip it in melted butter) is a healthy choice. It is a good source of protein and is soft enough to have before your pouch is ready for chicken or beef, so is a food choice early out.
Yes, what you are experiencing is normal. I see no reason that you cannot do both... enjoy your "bucket list" foods AND start eating a healthier diet.... just eat the things that are high in calories, carbs, or fat in more limited amounts.
I think that you may need to adjust your overall thinking about pre-op eating because it sounds like you think that "healthy eating" means eliminating things like crab and steak and ground beef (apologies if I am misinterpreting your words). Having RNY does not mean being on a diet with lots of food restricttions (or forbidden foods) for the rest of your life. Crab and beef are high protein foods that can easily be included in your new heathy eating plan post-op. Bacon double cheeseburgers are probably not something you will want to include in your post-RNY menu but there is no reason you cannot have part of a cheeseburger (even at almost 5 years out, I still cannot eat a whole one) especially if you eat it without the bread.

I went to my pre op class this week and the Doc told the class....NO LAST SUPPERS....NO LAST SUPPERS.

I did the last supper thing....but the others are right, I found that I can eat most of what I ate before surgery...just in much smaller quantities.
I do have trouble with some foods but overall I am not disappointed with what I can eat now. And the great part is that I'm not hungry like I was before surgery. Small quantities make me feel full and I don't miss the food.
good Luck

The more you eat before surgery...the more hassel it is when you have to deal with the citrate the night before. You will have anything you want in a few months. Don't load up on rice and potatoes...no sense in padding on a few more pounds. Use this time to get your head on straight..so you won't be dealing with these issues the day after surgery.
