Experience with sugar free candy made with isomalt?

I was in Walgreens yesterday browsing for sugar free mints and came across a bunch of new chocolate and other flavored candies that are considered low sugar or sugar free and are made with isomalt instead of malitol or sorbitol or any of the usual suspects for sugar substitutes. I haven't had any kinds of treats like these snce my surgery and am not sure I want to start, but in case I have a craving for something like this, does anyone have any experience with them? I just know my list of dumping foods include things made with sugar alcohols like sorbitol and malitol and that I should not have more than 5-10g of carbs or sugar alcohol in a serving. Even with those small serving sizes of the candies I reviewed, it would be easy to go over 10 g of sugar or carbs in a single serving. I may never try these anyway but am wondering what people think. I mean it would be great to have a sugar free Reese's peanut butter cup once in a while but not if it makes me sick or dump!

This is another form of SA

Isomalt is a sugar substitute, a type of sugar alcohol, used primarily for its sugar-like physical properties. It has only a small impact on blood sugar levels and does not promote tooth decay. It has 2 kilocalories/g, half the calories of sugars.[1] However, like most sugar alcohols (with the exception of erythritol), it carries a risk of gastric distress, including flatulence and diarrhoea, when consumed in large quantities. Therefore, isomalt is advised to not be consumed in quantities larger than about 50 g per day for adults and 25 g for children. Isomalt may prove upsetting to the stomach because the body treats it as a dietary fiber instead of as a simple carbohydrate. Therefore, like most fibers, it can increase bowel movements, passing through the bowel in virtually undigested form. As with other dietary fibers, regular consumption of isomalt might eventually lead one to become desensitized to it, decreasing the risk of stomach upset. Isomalt is typically blended with a high-intensity sweetener such as sucralose, so that the mixture has approximately the sweetness of sugar.

Thanks for the info! I like that it can cause diahrrea since I have a tendency to be stopped up! LOL. Not that I need a reason to eat a trigger food like candy, even if it's supposedly sugar free, it's good to know it may have some benefit.  I will not consume in large quantities, if at all, because it would defeat the point of my having surgery!

The gas is what kills me - like with any other SA - can't deal with that.  (beside horrid smell - there is the pain - that I can't handle)  There is bette rway to get good BM... and SA are too smelly and too painfull.  But some people have no problem with the SA.  Maybe you will be the lucky one.

I eat some of the Werther's hard candies s.f. with isomalt.

They are good, but too many give me gas big time.  So in small quantities they are fine for me.

That's good to know. I don't want to dump or fart excessively and I have to decide if I can handle having these around. I may be better off just not having them at all. Thanks for sharing your experience! The Werther's hard candies were one of the things I was considering buying.

I love and eat all the time - normal Very dark chocolate - the 75 -to 80% cocoa chocolate.
I dump and I also have severe RH, but the dark chocolate does not bother me. But then - one or 2 squares it all it takes these days to satisfy cravings for chocolate.  The rick is to allow the chocolate to melt in your mouth... then the full flavor can be reached..

My family will not allow me to eat sugar alcohols.
They also know when I cheat. It's not a happy time.

They're good to watch out for you like that. The more I think about it, I am not going to start buying these types of candies. I don't have the discipline to just have one or two - that's how I got to the weight I was at on my surgery date. I'd probably eat the whole bag and be pleased becuase it was low sugar. It's a slippery slope for me. I am going to just focus on getting my protein in and not try to get into the bad habit of rewarding myself with sweet treats. Not worth it.

You misunderstood. They are not looking out for me. They are looking out for them.
Sugar alcohol=room clearing gas.
I will say that they taste very good and for me are kind of  trigger back to the big ole bag of candy days.
