I do much better drinking through a straw to get in all my fluids, but I was told straws are a no-no. Is there a reason for the no straw rule?

I was told that they let air in your pouch filling you up quicker.

No real reason unless you have trouble with drinking too much in the very beginning while your pouch is still swollen and sore. But, trust me, that will only happen once!

Most surgeons have gotten around to allowing and even encouraging straw use now. I could NEVER have gotten in my fluids the first few months without a straw. And it actually cut down on the air I swallowed. I was not a good sipper. Even if my doc had "forbidden" it, I would have used a straw. I trust my perception of what my body needs and can handle and the research I have done.

Thanks ladies! There have been a few times I have "slipped" and forgotten the straw rule but had no problems. I think I will also follow what my body does best too!

No, there's no reason.  If using a straw makes you suck in gas and gives you discomfort, don't use one.  Otherwise, it's fine.

I'm pretty sure my kids go through enough plastic straws to keep Solo in business for quite some time LOL

I use a straw - it's the only way I get my fluids in. In fact, I'm using one now!

My doctor said this will stretch the pouch over time by using a straw on a daily basis. Using a straw takes in extra air, which in turn, stretches the pouch  I am surprised by some of the questions.  Here in California most  Insurance companies require six months of bariatric classes, and 26 weeks of going to
3-8 week classes of learning how to eat right.  In the bariatric classes, you are given tons information on what you can and cannot do, including the surgeon telling you this.  So again, I see so many questions on this site that I am actually shocked this information was not given.  Thanks!

I'm shocked at the misinformation given by many surgeons.  Drinking with a straw cannot stretch the pouch.  There is an opening at the top of the pouch and another at the bottom.  how could air stretch the pouch?  It cannot build up in there.  Supposing you even sucked in that much air with a straw.
