Who cheated on pre-op liquid diet?

My two week liquid diet was the hardest thing for me when it came to my whole RNY experience, especially the first 3 days.  I did cheat, but not till about a week into it.  I gave in and had egg beaters with salsa on top.  I had this everyday and stopped 24 hours before my surgery.  My liver was fine and he was able to do it laproscoptely.

I did not.  I was afraid to.

If you don't like the shakes your doc gave you, why not try some other brands?

And, I am not encouraging cheating, but if you're going to cheat, why not cheat with lean protein, not carbs?  At least with lean protein, you'd be getting nutrition and still helping to shrink your liver.

I did my diet for 4 weeks, and I cheated once by having a salad with Italian dressing. I was going through a huge food craving and it was so bad that I was was going to order a pizza ( I was going a little crazy) Anyway I talked myself out of binging and ate a huge salad. I dont know why but when finished the salad my body rejected it and I ended up throwing up and felt very sick for the next 24 hours..

I (thankfully) did not have to do a liquid diet prior to surgery, but I was on a several calorie restricted one for 5 days prior to my surgery. I was on an 800 cal a day, and it sucked. I ate A LOT of iceburg lettuce, let me tell you, lol.

But, 2 nights before surgery my family and I went out for an early meal (Mexican) and I ate whatever I wanted to because I knew that doing the bowel clense the following evening would take care of whatever I ate that night anyway. Let me tell you, my body had gotten used to being so low cal/fat that I had a come to Jesus moment in the bathroom about 30 minutes after eating dinner. The night I spent in and out of the bathroom, the diarrhea, the gas pains, etc was SO NOT worth the 20 minutes of eating what I wanted.

In conclusion...you are having this surgery for a reason and yes, being on a liquid diet sucks, but it's an ends to a means. And if you don't have the willpower to do this, how are you going to have the willpower to make the eating/lifestyle changes required to use your TOOL to keep the weight you lose off? You need to keep sight of the big picture.

I also cheated a little here and there with a slice of cheese, a few forkfuls of tuna salad or some saltines but I didn't do any big meals or anything.  I also know they like your insides to be as empty as possible to make things as easy on us and them as it can be. I stuck to it by the letter the last 4 days to ensure that my system was nice and empty.  They say the more empty you are the less pain you'll experience, plus my surgeon said they expected me to lose approx 1 lb per day.  In my 2 week pre-op liquid diet I lost 20 lbs and felt awesome.  I just had surgery on Weds and can truly say this has been nothing like I thought it would be.  No pain really at all, not even from the gas they pump you with... that all seems to be coming out just fine ;)

It will get better... for me the hardest part was the headaches and hunger the first 3-4 days... after that it got so much easier.

Best of luck to you!!!

Peace & Blessings... Kelly
