I am having the most difficult time losing weight before surgery. My surgeon said I need to lose at least 30 lbs before proceeding.   I know it's for health reasons. /But I also feel like if I could lose 30 lbs then I could lose more.  I've been trying, but failing. Any of you go through this before surgery ?

Hi, I am having the same issue. I have been on my pre-op diet for two weeks now and I have lost "1" pound!  I am supposed to lose 28 which is 10% of my weight .  As important as this is, ( my insurance requires the 6 mos weight loss etc before approval) and it feels like I can't get it together.  My husband is so supportive and keeps trying to remind me that it's not a diet, that I am making a total lifestyle change.... IF you have a good supportive person, let them help you.. we are all in this together in a way..... Hope you and I both have a better week...One day a time, just keep saying that.....

I'm going through exactly the same thing! I haven't eaten one thing. Just protein shakes and broth. I have been on it for 2 weeks and only lost 10 pounds! I mean, come on! It's making me discouraged.

Yes... I am pre-op and have lost 38 since Dec 1...  My surgeons office put me on a 1700 cal diet (all patients are put on this pre-op at my surgeons office)...  It's low fat, low sugar and alot of common sense.

Then a week before surgery, I start my pre-op diet, which is different than above - though not a liquid diet like many seem to have,

You might ask your office if they have a plan they can give you if you are struggling

Good luck.

I was not necessarily required to lose weight prior to having my surgery, but my insurance did require a 3 month pre-op physician supervised diet before they would approve me. I took this diet very seriously because I knew my insurance company was going to be looking for compliance to make sure I wasn't going to waste their money by not changing my lifestyle habits and end up regaining all my weight.

It was difficult at first, but in the end I'm glad I got used to journaling my food/calorie/protein/etc intake every day, drinking water, getting off of the soda and all of that before my surgery b/c it sure made my post-op transition a lot easier!

You can do this! Don't worry so much about the scale and focus on changing your eating habits and starting an exercise program and the weight will come off naturally after you start making those changes!

Good luck! :)

I was approved for surgery about 3 and 1/2 yrs ago. My surgeon said I should lose 35 lbs before surgery. I lost about 14. I didn't really try to hard. I thought he wouldn't hold me to it. He did. I was approved but he wouldn't do it till I lost the rest of the weight. Before I could lose the weight my husband lost his job. Then I couldn't afford the time off. By the time he had another job the approval had ran out and I had to start the process all over again.
This time I took it seriously, Well almost. I had gained 70 lbs from the first time. I still had to lose 35 lbs. I made small changes. I ate more veggies, less starch and sugar, and only ate like a quarter to half a cup of complex carbs, per meal. I didn't starve. I ate half a plate of veggies. I didn't smother them in butter. But if you eat a piece of meat the size of the palm of your hand, lots of veggies, and a small amount of carbs you will lose about 8 to 10 lbs a month. I also had a burger every once in a while I just didn't get the fries and drank a diet coke. I had pizza a few times. Only 2 pieces and alot of salad. (not a lot of dressing). I ate Chinese a couple times. I ate more of the veggies and lean meat and not the fried foods and starchy stuff. You can do it with better choices. The hardest part is getting started.

I had success by drinking a protein drink for breakfast and lunch, eating two snacks (1 fruit and one vegies w/pretzels in the afternoon), then a reasonable dinner (deck of cards size piece of meat, 1/2 plate of vegies, 1/3 cup starch)  I am down 28 pounds.  Now I am on the pre-surgery 30 carbs a day diet for the next 4 weeks.

Good luck, I hope you find something that works for you :)

My surgeons office required a 10 day pre-op CLEAR liquid diet in order for me to shrink my liver and drop about 10 lbs (they estimated 1 lb per day).  I actually did the diet for 12 days and lost 20 lbs and NO, I did not excersise... not enough energy, lol.

I was allowed 3 protein shakes a day made with 8 oz of skim or 1 % milk (I don't care for cow's milk so I used unsweetened almond milk) and in between clear, sugar free, caffeine free beverages that consisted of clear broths, sf jello, crystal light, sf lemonade, decaf coffee, decaf tea, sf popsicles.

I've heard some surgeons require their patients to do this anywhere from 3-4 weeks so perhaps this could give you the lbs off that you need?

Best of luck to you!!

Peace & Blessings... Kelly
